BOIJMANS VAN BEUNINGEN

Designed by MVRDV Architects, the hemispherical building is facaded with 1,664 mirrors and is the first art warehouse to be opened to the public. Passing through a large atrium, a glass window reveals the storage space where some 151,000 works are kept, as well as the restorers who worked on it. Objects, designs and paintings by the great masters, including Kandinsky and Basquiat, are also displayed in transparent display cases.

At Sonneveld, everything seems frozen in time. A bouquet of pale pink roses adorns the kitchen table. Built in 1933 and completely renovated by the Brinkman & Van der Vlugt firm for industrialist Albertus Sonneveld, the house is one of the best-preserved examples of Dutch functionalism, brilliantly applying the new principles of modern hygiene and comfort. Here one can delve into a page of architectural history.

OX space

The four-storey building is planned to be a new, avant-garde and stylish place, and the concept was tested in the nearly 1,000 square meters of space on the ground floor. On a rough concrete floor, the space offers a range of pop elements, including a café, fashion collections by fashion designers, works by Rotterdam artists, and a design corner showcasing the work of local designers including Sabine Marcelis and Forever Studio, as well as vintage collections. There are also about 20 events held every week, including yoga, parties, concerts, and more.

While Rotterdam is becoming more and more popular with young graduates of the Einhorn School of Design, the contemporary art gallery founded in 1999 by Saskia Copper and AadKrol has already taken the lead. Located at the foot of the iconic Red Apple building, the gallery is the city's first gallery to showcase design. Exhibits include works by Dutch designers such as Bas van Beek and Wouter Dam, as well as vintage pieces by renowned designer Gerrit Rietveld.

ROTONDE RESTAURANT

At the end of 2021, Rotonde debuted at the Rotterdam food scene, filling up its seats from the moment it opened at 5pm every day to receive its first guests. Three partners in their thirties, including young chef Jord Coree, are driving a vegan and fermented food craze, and the restaurant has been awarded a Michelin Green Star in 2023. Diners can watch the chefs work on the charcoal fire in the wood-fired oven at the bar, or enjoy a meal in a simple restaurant independently designed by the three partners.

The venue, which is also a gallery and interior design institution, is located in a well-preserved neighborhood of red brick houses in Kralingen. The thoughtfully furnished space of almost 1,000 square metres showcases a range of international and Dutch interior design brands such as the MR 10 chair (Knoll) by Mies vander Rohe, the Smalto table (Knoll) by Barber & Osgerby and The Lady Baby wallpaper (LondonArt). In the basement, a large interior gallery is curated by a group of Rotterdam artists, rearranged every four months, blending design with contemporary art.

LITTLE C LIVING COMMUNITY

Connected by metal aisles, the 15-building complex was completed in 2021 and is one of the most ambitious residential projects in the city. Under the Culd Agency's plan, a wasteland across the neighborhood has been replaced by more than 300 buildings and a range of businesses, including the Old Scuola West pizzeria and the Kula Yoga Café with a delightful terrace where you can enjoy the sunset.

HUIDENCLUB multi-functional laboratory space

In 2021, under the impetus of architect Chantal Schoenmakers (right) and Liv Vaisberg (left), artistic director and co-founder of Design Collectible in Brussels, designer Tomas Dirrix, this multifunctional experimental space houses a roasted coffee shop, two exhibition spaces, a studio for Rotterdam artists, and a range of cultural events.

BRUTUS Art Center

Located in an industrial park, the art center is a prelude to a large-scale project launched in 2008 by renowned Rotterdam artist and designer Joep Van Lieshout. The artist moved here 30 years ago, and after continuous planning and renovation, it will be transformed into a cultural complex with residences, museums, studios and art education. During this period, the 6,000-square-metre venue will feature around 15 exhibitions a year, showcasing a variety of alternative creative scenes.

SUPERNOVA HOTEL

The first hotel of its kind in the city, the first of its kind in Rotterdam, it feels more like home. ContainrAffairs wanted to evoke the multicultural character of the city with 150 different neighborhoods through bold colours: green bottles for restaurants, midnight blue for guest rooms, and carmine for corridors and bookshelves. The hotel regularly hosts pop-up dinners, DJ performances and flower arrangement workshops, as well as showcasing the work of local artists.

MORGAN&MEES酒店

Opened in 2023, the hotel features a relaxed and stylish design and is located in an ochre-red brick building from the 30s of the 20th century, which is the former site of a local radio and television station. The hotel features a cosy bar and restaurant with elegant angular wooden benches, around 20 bright rooms with large floor-to-ceiling windows and a penthouse apartment with a large roof terrace overlooking the Rotterdam skyline.

Sophia van den Hoek, a lifestyle photographer and author of a book about Paris (Chêne), transformed her studio into a boutique offering food and beverage during the pandemic. Initially, the shop only served coffee on the go, but as its popularity grew, she decided to decorate her studio with this beautiful table made from recycled plastic by Dutch designer Dirk van der Kooij. Here you can enjoy fresh dishes made with labné yogurt cheese, mouth-watering homemade cakes and biscuits, as well as cookbooks, photographs taken by Sophia and the work of local artisans.

The restaurant's window is plastered with a note: "There's no restaurant behind the scenes," a quip that fits perfectly with the secret spot that chef Merel Charlotte Beelenkamp and designer Bastian Kalmeyer launched two years ago. The Fundamental menu features forests, reclaimed lands and seas, making it an unforgettable experience.

Everyone here is familiar with Susan Bijl's multicolored shopping bags made of lightweight canvas introduced in 2000 as an alternative to plastic bags. The bag was an instant success and prompted the designer to embark on a full-time business. Since then, she has successively launched other styles such as backpacks, picnic bags, waist bags, and clutches. The new space also houses pieces designed by Belgian duo Muller Van Severen and Dutch brand RiRa. What a wonderful match!

PARQIET CAFÉ

It's hard to imagine that the café was originally a stable built in 1858, and that Radojka Bozic and Meta Heijnen transformed it into a café almost eight years after they took over the stables. On sunny winter days, guests can sit on the terrace draped in blankets and enjoy homemade banana bread, or in summer, sit on a lounger and relax with fresh watermelon juice.

Erasmus Bridge

The slender shape of the Erasmus cable-stayed bridge, reminiscent of a swan's neck, is known as "De Zwaan", and its moving part is called a "bascule deck", which allows large boats to cross the bridge over the Nuevo Maas. The glass tower building of Le Rotterdam in the background was built in 2013 by renowned Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas.

SAILOR AND THE GIRL餐厅

The restaurant, called "The Girl and the Sailor", tells a story on the walls, where renowned street artist Hugo Kaagman drew inspiration from Delft pottery to paint a mural that evokes memories of the troubled days of the Katendrecht neighborhood. Once the port of departure for ships heading to the Americas, tourists now flock to the area for a surprise four- or five-course meal.

PUTAINE RESTAURANT

Two years ago, the Putaine restaurant opened on a pontoon in the River Nueva Maas, which runs through the city. This famous restaurant is the third restaurant opened by entrepreneur Eva Eekman and her partner and chef Michael Schook. The décor designed by Studio Rotganzen has a touch of the 80s: pink fluorescent neon lights, mirrored ball sculptures, colourful chairs by Dutch designers. Here, highly skilled chefs bring out the best in the flavors of vegetables and seafood.

Claire Silva decided to add a touch of "La Dolce Vita" to her beige and grey minimalist Dutch-inspired interiors in the city's trendy district. She chose photographs by Ibiza photographer Linda Wit, and rattan, terracotta and natural fibre furniture and ornaments from Bali, Spain and Marseille, France, as well as beautiful fringed lamps designed by Honoré, form a warm and sophisticated décor.

S'ZOMERS Boutique

This boutique specializes in flowers of all styles and exudes a joyful atmosphere. An elegant bouquet of flowers is complemented by gaudy silk dahlias. Also based on the theme of flowers, the scented candles and censers of the Trudon and Astier de Villatte brands, as well as plants, pottery and ornaments by Dutch designers, vases by Studio Zar and paintings by graphic artist Rop van Mierlo from the "Wild Animals" series all add to the enchantment of this botanical temple.
