author:Family Doctor Newspaper

What is the matter with a child who can't sleep well all night and cries frequently for no other reason?

The child may have intestinal flatulence, don't worry, Jiangxi Provincial Children's Hospital will come to support it, so that parents can easily deal with neonatal intestinal flatulence~

Why do newborns have flatulence?

○ The intestinal development of newborn babies is imperfect, and the direction of intestinal peristalsis is random and irregular. If there is gas in the intestines, the baby will be very uncomfortable and even painful, and the newborn crying, swallowing gas during breastfeeding, or the fermentation of bacteria in the intestinal lumen to produce a large amount of gas can also easily cause neonatal bloating.

○ Newborn babies mainly breathe in the abdomen, the digestive tract produces more gas, and the intestinal smooth muscle and abdominal wall striated muscle tone are low will also cause abdominal distention, and the baby writhes to expel intestinal gas.

○ When a newborn baby feels uncomfortable due to flatulence, he or she usually seeks comfort by drinking milk, but drinking milk may make the stomach more uncomfortable, which is manifested as eating for a while.

○ Gastrointestinal discomfort caused by flatulence affects the sleep of newborns, and it is easy to wake up when sleeping in bed, and sleeping in arms, sleeping on the stomach or curling up can slightly relieve the discomfort.

What are the manifestations of intestinal flatulence in newborns?

○ Poor sleeping, crying: Newborns sleep with their hands and legs curled up, making a straining sound, sometimes their faces are red, and they cry violently suddenly.

○ Sleeping: The child falls asleep when he is held and wakes up as soon as he is put down.

○ Love to lie on your stomach: When lying on your stomach, your child will be slightly more comfortable and quieter.

○ Dishonest drinking: always kicking the legs or pulling the nipples, if the baby lies on his side to feed, the child may push his feet frequently, and the body jumps upwards from time to time.

○ Constantly want to drink milk: every time you don't cry after the nipple, parents always mistakenly think that the child is hungry, in fact, the baby is looking for a way to soothe himself, but eating too much will aggravate flatulence.

○ Farts and defecation: The baby farts and defecates frequently, and the stool is loose and foamy.

How can it be effectively prevented?

1. Quit gas-producing food: For babies fed milk powder, if they cry, irritable, flatulent for a long time, or have allergic manifestations such as eczema, it is recommended to consult the doctor whether to consider changing to hydrolyzed protein low lactose milk powder (deep hydrolyzed or partially hydrolyzed).

2. Advice for breastfeeding moms:

Avoid shellfish, dairy products (milk, ice cream, cheese, etc.), cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, etc.), coffee, etc.

Avoid swallowing air when feeding:

Avoid feeding your baby when he cries violently. When feeding with a bottle, there should be no air in the part of the nipple that the baby is latching onto, and it is best to use an exhaust bottle. Babies who are prone to flatulence, leakage or spitting up can even burp every 5 minutes or so.

The burp position should be correct:

When burping, hold your baby upright, rest your baby's head on the adult's shoulder, and gently pat your baby's back with your hand until you have a hiccup.

Postural changes:

(1) When the baby is flatulent, the baby's posture can be changed: parents can give the baby kangaroo to hold, lie on the stomach, lie on the side or can also be held vertically, and the parents press the baby's abdomen on the shoulder to improve abdominal symptoms.

(2) Plane hug: put the baby's body on the adult's side of the forearm, head outward leaning near the elbow bend, legs hanging at hand, the adult tightly grasp the root of the thigh and buttocks in the diaper area, and the forearm sticks to the baby's tight belly.

Massage:

With the warm palm of your hand centered on your baby's belly button, make a clockwise abdominal touch. Parents need to pay attention to grasp the best time to touch, it is recommended to do abdominal touch half an hour before and after feeding, and the baby is quiet.
