On April 29, after a 6.5-hour donation process, Mei Jiaxiang, a caring guy, successfully donated 285 ml of hematopoietic stem cell suspension in Wuhu Yijishan Hospital. His kindness not only made him the 95th case of hematopoietic stem cell donor in Ma'anshan City and the 612th case of hematopoietic stem cell donor in Anhui Province, but also sent hope of life to a strange seriously ill patient. The "spark of life" donated by Mei Jiaxiang was sent to a hospital in East China by Ma'anshan blood donation volunteers as soon as possible, lighting up the patient's new hope for life.
He also donated blood and was enthusiastic about public welfare
Mei Jiaxiang, a 23-year-old young man from Ma'anshan, is currently working as a primary school Chinese teacher at Chengbei Experimental School, a primary school affiliated to Anhui Normal University. As early as December 2019, when he was a freshman, he participated in a blood donation event for the first time on campus in Chongqing. In the process of blood donation, through the introduction of the school's Red Cross volunteers, Mei Jiaxiang learned the importance of hematopoietic stem cell donation and knew that it was an honorable act that could save the lives of others. Therefore, he and his roommate did not hesitate to actively register for the sample and decided to become a volunteer for hematopoietic stem cell donation.
In the next two years, Mei Jiaxiang will insist on donating blood every year, conveying love and warmth with practical actions. In addition, since his freshman year, he has actively participated in various activities organized by the school's Youth Volunteer Association, including a trip to the lighthouse to teach in the mountainous area, blood donation publicity, volunteer service for Jie Xiaoqing, and volunteer service for epidemic prevention.
Thousands of miles of "marrow" fate, love for Chongqing and Anhui
In January 2023, Mei Jiaxiang received a call from the staff of the Chongqing branch of the China Bone Marrow Bank and learned that his HLA classification matched a critically ill patient. Through the detailed introduction of the staff, he eliminated the unfamiliarity of the hematopoietic stem cell donation process and deeply understood the irreplaceable significance of this act to save lives. After consulting with a friend who was studying medicine and receiving the support of his parents, he resolutely decided to complete this glorious and significant act of saving lives in Chongqing when he was about to graduate. On February 27 of the same year, accompanied by his roommate, Mei Jiaxiang successfully completed high-score sampling. However, until he graduated, he did not receive a follow-up donation notice, leaving a trace of regret.
In June 2023, the staff of the Chongqing branch contacted Mei Jiaxiang again and informed him that another patient had been successfully matched with him. At this time, Mei Jiaxiang had returned from Chongqing to his hometown of Huangchi Town, Dangtu County, Ma'anshan City, Anhui Province. He did not hesitate to express his willingness to donate, and successfully transferred the information from the Chongqing branch to the Anhui branch. In early July of the same year, accompanied by Ma'anshan Red Cross volunteers, Mei Jiaxiang participated in the pre-donation physical examination. After learning that the physical examination had reached the standard, he was full of joy and looked forward to realizing his wish to donate to save people as soon as possible. Regrettably, however, the donation was once again unsuccessful.
Half a year later, in January 2024, Mei Jiaxiang, who had been teaching at Chengbei Experimental Primary School in Wuhu City, received a call for the third time that he had been successfully matched with a patient. Since the previous physical examination had expired, he rushed back to Ma'anshan from Wuhu the next day for another pre-donation physical examination. After the physical examination, he asked the staff of the Ma'anshan Workstation of the Anhui Branch of the China Bone Marrow Bank, who accompanied him throughout the whole process, with a little worry: "Uncle, can you successfully donate this time? Will the donation affect the children's curriculum?" In the communication with the staff, the staff deeply felt his deep care for the patients and his love for the sacred profession of teachers.
A journey of love, set sail
For hematopoietic stem cell donation, the condition of critically ill patients is difficult to predict, from matching to high-score sampling, to physical examination, donation to hospital admission to successful donation, every link is full of uncertainties. Timely communication and feedback between the attending physician and the China Bone Marrow Bank are maintained. As a prospective donor, Mei Jiaxiang strengthened his willingness to donate after receiving the notice of matching type. He was asked to temporarily stop donating blood so as not to delay possible donations due to the interval between blood donations, while maintaining his original enthusiasm and pace of life.
After a long wait, in mid-March, Mui finally received a notice of consultation for a donation planned for April 29. He did not hesitate to say that he would fully cooperate with patients as long as they needed it. On April 8, the Ma'anshan Red Cross Society sent an official letter requesting support for Mei Jiaxiang's donation. The principal and other leaders attached great importance to this and solved his worries about his work. His grade teachers and class counselors also actively supported his kindness and were eager to help him substitute for his teaching.
The children in Mei Jiaxiang's class 107 learned that the teacher was about to donate the "seeds of life" to save people, and they gave him a "loving hug" to express their reluctance. April 24 was the first day of Mei Jiaxiang's donation in the hospital, and he was accompanied by volunteers from the China Bone Marrow Bank. During his admission to the hospital, the volunteers in Wuhu also changed their tricks to deliver him delicious food cooked by themselves. These meticulous and enthusiastic services made Mei Jiaxiang deeply feel that the journey of donating hematopoietic stem cells was not alone, and he received encouragement and support from many people.
At this moment, Mei Jiaxiang said affectionately: "From Chongqing to Anhui, from students to teachers, I have crossed the mountains and rivers and changed my role identity, but what has always remained the same is my willingness to use my small self to achieve my big self and use my youth to reshape the miracle of life."
