1. In accordance with article 351 of the Criminal Law of the People's Republic of China: Anyone who illegally cultivates between 500 and 3,000 opium poppies or a relatively large number of other narcotic plants shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not more than five years, short-term detention or controlled release, and shall also be fined. Whoever illegally cultivates 3,000 or more opium poppies or other narcotic plants in large quantities shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not less than five years and shall also be fined or have his property confiscated. Illegal cultivation of opium poppy or other narcotic plants may be exempted from punishment if they are automatically eradicated before harvesting.
