Duke Qi Huan built a cypress bed
In 685 BC, after Duke Huan of Qi became the king of Qi, he was bent on dominating the princes. With the assistance of Guan Zhong, he rectified internal affairs, developed resources, developed production, and relied on the advantages of the coastal areas to let the common people cook salt and fish, increase income, accumulate strength, enrich the country and strengthen the army, and the Qi State soon became strong. In only seven years, Duke Huan of Qi successively eliminated the State of Tan and the State of Sui, united the State of Chen and the State of Cao to crusade and subdue the State of Song, repaired the States of Zheng and Wei and isolated the State of Lu. In 679 BC, the Duke of Qi Huan ordered the princes to make an alliance, and was promoted by the princes who participated in the alliance as the leader of the alliance, becoming the first overlord of the Spring and Autumn Period.
The reason why Duke Qi Huan was able to dominate was because of the wealth and strength of Qi, and the prosperity of Qi was mainly due to the benefits of fishing and salt along the sea. In the summer of this year, Qi Huan went to the seaside to cruise with the benefits of fishing and salt. Starting from the capital city of Linzi, take a boat down the Zishui River, come to the shore of the East China Sea (now known as the Bohai Sea), and see that there is an earthen platform in the bay, so let the boat approach and stop, and board the earthen platform. Qi Huan Gong looked at the sea and saw that the water waves were vast, boundless, and turbulent. The sea breeze is refreshing and pleasant.
"The sea is so magnificent! This is really a good place to watch the sea and spend summer!" Qi Huan Gong said with admiration. He looked at the earthen platform at his feet, which looked low and small in the vast sea, and immediately ordered the platform to be built high and large.
Kashiwa sleeper
Duke Qi Huan returned to the capital Linzi, still thinking about building a platform. He asked a minister to be in charge of building the platform, mobilized thousands of manpower, and transported earthwork from the area of Linzi City, which took half a year to build successfully. The newly built big platform, 50 acres in circumference, up to dozens of thousands, stands majestically, towers into the sky. Later, Duke Qi Huan ordered someone to build a dormitory with cypress wood on the platform as a palace, so it was called "cypress bed" in the history books.
Baiyutai is only sixty or seventy miles away from Linzi, the capital of Qi State, and there is a green hill ten miles southeast of Tai. The water and grass here are abundant, the trees are verdant, and there are birds and animals. Duke Qi Huan often went to the stage to watch the sea, hunt and play, and also met the princes on the Bai Sleeping Platform.
