After 4 arduous IVF attempts, a precious little life was finally conceived in the mother's womb. However, at just 24 weeks old, this little creature couldn't wait to explore the world, so when it weighed only 650 grams, it reported to the world early. During the 113-day hospitalization, she experienced multiple tests of life and death, but fortunately, with the joint treatment and careful care of multidisciplinary experts from Hubei Provincial Maternal and Child Health Hospital, this "little princess" finally broke through many difficulties and returned to a warm family in good health.

The precious baby who was successful after 4 times of IVF was born prematurely

Mr. Yu and Ms. Fu of Guangshui have not been pregnant since they got married. In 2023, after 3 IVF failures, Ms. Fu finally successfully conceived with the help of the reproductive department of Hubei Provincial Maternal and Child Health Hospital.

However, because of adenomyosis, Ms. Fu showed signs of threatened miscarriage during pregnancy. At the end of December 2023, she was not effective in protecting the fetus in the local hospital and was transferred to the obstetrics department of the Optics Valley Campus of Hubei Provincial Maternal and Child Health Hospital for further treatment. Zhao Yun, deputy director of the Department of Obstetrics, provided Ms. Fu with cervical cerclage, drugs to promote fetal lung development and brain protection, and also applied for multidisciplinary consultation in neonatology, surgical anesthesiology, etc., to make plans for possible preterm birth in advance.

The obstetric team did their best, but on the afternoon of December 31, 2023, the baby girl, who was only 24 weeks gestational age, came to the world ahead of schedule, with cyanosis all over her body, blue skin on her face and limbs, no crying, weak breathing, and a weight of only 650 grams.

Seeing such a fragile little life, the neonatology doctors and nurses also hung their hearts. Time is of the essence, the medical staff immediately gave a series of rescues such as tracheal intubation, neonatal resuscitation, etc., 10 minutes later, the baby's blood oxygen saturation slowly rose, vital signs improved slightly, and was sent to the neonatal intensive care unit for further treatment.

Premature babies need to draw about 10 ml of blood for relevant tests after birth, but the 650 grams of blood in the baby's body is only about 50 ml, which is extremely precious. The neonatal nurse used fetal cord blood to complete this test, which prevented the slap baby from hemorrhagic shock.

"Passing the test" has survived many life crises

As early as the prenatal consultation, Zhu Huaping, deputy director of the neonatology department, communicated with the couple about the pros and cons of premature infant treatment, and they firmly stated that they wanted to save the baby, and the child was named "grapefruit" after birth.

Yuzu is an extremely premature baby, all organs are immature, Zhu Huaping formulated and implemented a treatment plan for her in advance after birth, "golden 1 hour, golden 1 day and golden 1 week", Yuzu has to face many dangerous and fatal hurdles such as breathing, infection, and feeding.

Zhu Huaping, deputy director of the Department of Neonatology, reviewed the "grapefruit".

The first level is the breathing level. Yuzu was too small, her lungs lacked power, and she needed the support of an invasive ventilator, so the team of doctors discussed and adjusted the treatment plan many times, constantly adjusting according to Yuzu's physical condition, and finally changed to non-invasive respiratory support on the 14th day of her birth. In the early days of non-invasive ventilators, the nasal mask was required to be highly airtight, and Yuzu felt uncomfortable and often twisted his body to get rid of the nasal mask, so the doctors and nurses took turns to guard and comfort day and night to ensure that the nasal mask was in a good position, and finally passed the breathing barrier.

The second level is the infection level. Despite the meticulous care of the medical team, Yuzu suffered from neonatal sepsis when she was one month old. This disease progresses rapidly, is prone to meningitis and other diseases, and can be life-threatening in severe cases. Through early detection, accurate judgment and continuous adjustment of drugs for pathogens, and timely adjustment of treatment plans based on blood culture results, the infection was gradually controlled.

The catastrophe of retinopathy of prematurity, Yuzu has not "escaped". In a fundus screening more than 3 months after her birth, it was suggested that retinopathy in both eyes, rapid progressive type of both eyes, rapid progression of lesions, and blindness if not treated in time. In the afternoon of the same day, the doctor and nurse in charge of the bed accompanied Yuzu to complete the vitreous drug injection in both eyes, and the fundus was significantly improved after the operation.

Precious breast milk and care in the ICU

Feeding yuzu is also difficult. The main source of nutrition for premature babies in the early years of birth is intravenous nutrition, but her large blood vessels are thin and short, and there are many capillaries. Gui Wenting, the head nurse, said.

Breast milk is not just food for premature babies, it is also a precious medicine. Because of severe placenta accreta, Ms. Fu had heavy bleeding during childbirth, and was transferred to the adult ICU after giving birth. Yuzu's blood oxygen and heart rate fluctuate every time she feeds, so the nursing team increases the amount of milk little by little, arranges special personnel to take turns to guard her, and constantly observes the changes in her condition until she can feed independently.

As Yuzu grows up, her emotional needs are increasing, and she is unwilling to sleep in the incubator and small shaker, so the doctors and nurses will hold her in their arms in 24-hour shifts and give her kangaroo care. Gui Wenting said with a smile.

In order to record the growth of Yuzu, the nursing team also prepared a "growth diary" for her, which was weaned, milked, operated on, and 100 days...... A thick book, illustrated and illustrated.

After more than 3 months of ventilator-assisted breathing, more than half a month of oxygen inhalation, 113 days of precise treatment and meticulous care, Yuzu "passed five levels and cut six generals", and his physical condition gradually stabilized, his weight increased from 650 grams to 3500 grams, and all vital indicators were normal, creating a miracle of life. On April 22, Yuzu was finally discharged from the hospital, and her parents, grandparents came to pick her up, and when she saw the neonatal nurse, the child's grandfather choked up before he finished saying "thank you".

On April 28, my parents brought grapefruit to the hospital for a review, and under the guidance of the medical staff, the novice parents were able to take the baby at home smoothly, and the indicators of the review were good. The Yuzu family also brought three pennants to the neonatology department, reproductive department, and obstetrics department, "Thanks to the Hubei Provincial Maternal and Child Health Hospital, our family has a precious baby, and the dream can be realized!"
