Paris is home to a number of well-known universities. The libraries of these universities are not only important places for students to learn, but also important platforms for knowledge exchange and cultural dissemination. In this issue, we will give you a brief overview of how some university libraries in Paris work, and how you can make good use of them as a student, a member of the community, or anyone else.
Contrary to what you might think, university libraries are not limited to students at the university: anyone can enter the library! University libraries are open to everyone, but some libraries may have some restrictions, such as if you are a secondary school student, you must be accompanied by an adult. In addition, prices vary: some libraries are free for students, while others charge a subscription fee.
A university library is a place for research, reading, and work. You can go there to do personal research or study courses, knowing that there must be a large collection of works from the subjects taught at the university, and you can also go there to consult the books and literature that interest you, do homework or study the subjects that interest you.
Admission to university libraries is generally free, but you will need to register to use certain services, such as digital tools or borrowing books. You'll need to register at the front desk and may also need supporting documents such as a student ID card that can allow you to take advantage of discounted rates or additional services.
There are 26 university libraries in the Île-de-France region, 17 of which are located at the Institut de Paris, and another 9 at literary and scientific institutions or similar. Since January 2018, the Higher Education Library Directory has been available online, allowing you to access a directory of 700 such libraries, as well as the contact details of the responsible persons and search by name or institution.
