The BYD Song L intelligent driving version unveiled at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show has aroused the interest of many car enthusiasts, and BYD, which has always been very conservative in intelligent assisted driving, has launched a smart driving model that is a rare operation, what will be different about this car?
The author believes that the car has two major highlights, namely:
- Intelligent driving system lever
- Lever to change lanes
As an early user of BYD's smart car, I personally have a deep understanding of the intelligent assisted driving system of its first generation Han DM; if you want to open all the assisted driving programs, you need to open the main program on the screen first, and then manually turn on the lane change assistance and adaptive cruise on the steering wheel by pressing the button, which is not very convenient to use during driving.
Subsequently, the later models added a one-button opening of the steering wheel button, but it is more convenient to control it without the following figure, which is a major improvement in the hardware of the Song L intelligent driving version.
The second is the improvement of functions, such as ILCA (paddle lane change), which is also not equipped on its old models, as for the experience of the proximity valet parking system, only waiting for the actual car to arrive at the store for testing, other programs are not special, basically the regular functions of the intelligent assisted driving system. Its navigation system still only provides "high-speed piloting", that is, high-speed navigation assisted driving, and there is currently no navigation system for complex road conditions in cities with high speed.
Interpret the slots
There are two types of intelligent assisted driving systems for automobiles, one of which is low-cost pure vision system intelligent driving, to put it bluntly, it is the use of cameras to detect road conditions to achieve intelligent driving; the reliability of this program is currently difficult to evaluate, in short, the use of this program of car brands in the field of intelligent driving is always more and more low-key, the reason is not difficult to decipher. The second is the hardware platform that cooperates with various sensors through cameras, and the commonly used sensors are millimeter-wave radar and lidar, although ultrasonic radar also has a certain role, but it is not very important.
Ultrasonic radar uses mechanical waves, which have a very short detection range and can only be used for low-speed manoeuvring.
Millimeter-wave radar uses electromagnetic wave detection, with a coverage range of about 200 meters, and is less disturbed by natural factors, making it one of the key sensors for intelligent driving cars.
Lidar is similar to millimeter-wave radar in concept, and the detection distance is also comparable, but it is greatly affected by traffic meteorological factors, but LiDAR has the function of 3D stereoscopic mapping, which can accurately identify the type of obstacles, so it is inseparable from LiDAR to achieve highly automated driving.
The BYD Song L Smart Driving Edition has 12 ultrasonic radars, which are not expensive, and the remaining 5 millimeter-wave radars, which are not low, and 11 cameras - still no lidar is seen. The lowest-priced mid-range rear-drive SUV can refer to the Leap C10, with a starting price of only 160,000 levels for the intelligent driving version, equipped with a lidar. Some versions of the mid-size crossover SUV Xpeng G6 are equipped with dual lidars, and the actual starting price of the series has been as low as 200,000 yuan. The Zhiji LS6 mid-to-large crossover SUV is equipped with LiDAR as standard, with a starting price of 220,000 yuan, and offers high-power rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive dual series options. The AVATR 12, which costs slightly more than 260,000 yuan, is equipped with three lidars!
After all, the price of this car is 189,800-249,800 yuan, and the price of the intelligent driving version is expected to be higher than that of the flagship version; at the same time, the power battery used in the car still only supports 400V charging technology lithium iron phosphate battery, and the above vehicles basically reach the standard of 800V high-voltage charging, and the cost of lithium iron phosphate battery is low.
Therefore, the Song L intelligent driving version may not be able to attract geek car owners, and its intelligent driving system hardware standards and intelligent car machine chip standards are indeed low compared with competing products at the same level, and I personally feel that BYD, which was once very atmospheric in terms of configuration, has changed a little.
