From January to June 2023, a criminal gang with a clear division of labor illegally fished and sold aquatic products in the key waters of the Yangtze River Basin, Zhuhu Lake. In February 2024, the Wujin District People's Procuratorate filed a civil public interest lawsuit attached to the criminal case against the nine people involved in the case.

Case review

In the early morning of June 7, 2023, Li, together with Sun and Xie, drove a boat to the waters of Zhuhu Lake, used triple gillnets to catch catches, and then handed over the catches to Xu for sale. When Xu was loading the catch and was about to drive away, he was caught red-handed by the police.

After the four people arrived at the case, they confessed that between January and June 2023, the defendant Li modified his private boat even though he knew that the lake was in a fishing ban period, and together with Sun and Xie, he used a triple gillnet to illegally fish aquatic products in the waters of the lake, and sold the catch to the defendant Xu, who purchased it and then transported it to Yixing, and sold it to Wan and five others at a higher price for illegal benefits.

Zhang Jie, an assistant procurator who participated in the handling of the case, said that after the review of the procuratorate, as of the time of the case, the gang had illegally fished and sold a total of 55,825.45 kilograms of fish in the waters of the lake through the above methods, including 50,445 kilograms of silver carp, 4,970 kilograms of silver carp, 206.2 kilograms of white fish, 55.45 kilograms of yellow catfish, 49 kilograms of bream, 1.15 kilograms of eel, and 98.65 kilograms of other fish, with a total value of 469,536.6 yuan.

Recently, the procuratorate filed a civil public interest lawsuit attached to the criminal case against nine people. In the end, the court sentenced three fishermen, including Li, and Xu, a long-term buyer and seller, to fixed-term imprisonment ranging from 2 to 11 months for the crime of illegally fishing aquatic products, and sentenced five traders who received stolen goods to criminal detention ranging from 6 months to 5 months and a fine for the crime of covering up and concealing criminal proceeds. At the same time, the nine defendants were sentenced to jointly and severally compensate for the loss of ecological resources, totaling more than 960,000 yuan.
