Wang Yi held talks with Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohammed

On April 25, 2024, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, held talks with Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohammed in Beijing.

Wang Yi said that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia, and it is an important year to carry forward the past and open up the future. The two countries are friendly neighbors sharing weal and woe, and their traditional friendship is "constantly cutting waters." Over the past half century since the establishment of diplomatic relations, no matter how the international situation changes, China and Maldives have always been frank and trusting, helping each other, and have always been good and true friends. China will firmly support the Maldivian side in pursuing a development path suited to its own national conditions, support Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in advancing the concept of "prosperous Malaysia" governance, and stand ready to maintain close high-level exchanges with the Maldivian side, work together for common development, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, and benefit the two peoples.

Wang Yi said that last year, President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reached an important consensus on jointly building a China-Malaysia community with a shared future, drawing a blueprint for the development of bilateral relations in the new era. China is committed to taking the development of China-Maldives relations as a priority in its neighborhood diplomacy, and stands ready to work with Maldives to implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, deepen high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, and take the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations as an opportunity and the building of a China-Maldives community with a shared future as a guide to build a more brilliant next 50 years of bilateral relations.

Wang Yi pointed out that Malaysia is an important member of ASEAN, a representative of emerging economies, and a positive and steady force in the Muslim world. The two countries have always supported each other in safeguarding their core interests and national dignity. China is ready to strengthen communication and coordination with the Maldivian side, speak up on the international stage, uphold international fairness and justice, oppose unilateralism and bullying, and defend the common interests of the Global South.

Wang Yi said that at present, China is accelerating high-quality development, and Malaysia is also developing emerging industries, and China-Malaysia cooperation has great potential. China has been Malaysia's largest trading partner for 15 consecutive years, and the cooperation between the two countries in building the Belt and Road Initiative has yielded fruitful results. The two sides need to accelerate cooperation in infrastructure, digital economy, green development, new energy vehicles and other fields, promote the upgrading of the construction of "two countries, two parks", carry out poverty reduction experience and inter-party exchanges, and promote the continuous development of bilateral relations.

Mohammed said that the friendship between Malaysia and China spans thousands of years and has a long history, which brooks no interference or destruction by any external force. The Maldivian side firmly adheres to the one-China policy and opposes external forces stirring up trouble in the South China Sea. China is a reliable friend and partner of Malaysia, and the Maldives is willing to take the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries as an opportunity to further strengthen exchanges at all levels, learn from China's experience in development and poverty reduction, deepen cooperation in energy transition, digital economy, agriculture and tourism, and create a better future for bilateral relations.

The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern. Mohammed said that the Maldivian side highly appreciates China's just position on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and firmly advocates a two-state solution to the Palestinian issue. Wang Yi said that China is ready to strengthen coordination and cooperation with the Maldivian side to promote a comprehensive, just and lasting settlement of the Palestinian issue at an early date.
