Behind the "curtain controversy" is a generational difference

Recently, a video of "the elderly on the train accused the young people in the lower bunks of hanging curtains and refusing the elderly to sit" aroused heated discussions among netizens. "It's love to let you sit, and it's your duty not to let you sit", many netizens left messages below the video. Through this conflict between the old and the young, it is not difficult to see the differences in people's concepts in different eras.

As society progresses, it is inevitable that the younger generation and the older generation will have different ideas about life, and their living habits are often different. Young people are more privacy-conscious and need enough personal space even in public places such as trains, while some older people are still accustomed to sitting in the lower berths for the convenience of moving around, even if they buy a middle or upper berth. In the era of scarcity, "sharing" is a helpless move, a concession that people have to make to the quality of life, and the maximum use of limited resources. However, with the rapid development of social economy and the more reasonable allocation of resources, if we still stay at the cognitive level of "maximizing the use of everything", it is a little not "timely". From "reasonable" to "unreasonable", it reflects the evolution of social civilization and the change of times.

To be clear, hard sleepers are not a shared resource and their users have access to them after purchasing a ticket. Other passengers are not entitled to use the lower berth without the consent of the lower berth passenger. If the elderly want to sit in the lower berth to rest, they can communicate with the lower berth passengers in a friendly manner, and if they are unable to climb the ladder due to physical reasons, they can also negotiate with the lower berth passengers to change the berth and make up the difference between the lower berth and other berths. It is believed that most young people are willing to provide assistance to the elderly in any way they can. When going out, everyone should understand and tolerate each other, and not only care about personal interests and ignore the rights of others.

In January 2024, the Ministry of Transport and other six departments issued the "Notice on Further Strengthening the Work of Barrier-free Travel Services for the Elderly", which mentions that the 12306 website, mobile phone client and other ticketing functions will be optimized and improved, and the automatic identification and priority arrangement of the elderly to choose the lower berth will be promoted. In other words, when there are enough tickets, the ticketing system allows passengers to choose their own specific berths, and at the same time, the lower berths will be allocated to seniors aged 60 and above. The "May Day" holiday is approaching, and people find that many train tickets to popular tourist destinations are "sold in seconds", so in this case, the elderly "choose shops" has become a luxury. Therefore, if you want to ensure the comfortable travel of the elderly during the peak tourist season, the elderly and their families should plan and prepare in advance.

In order to solve the travel problem of the elderly, more social forces are needed to participate in the "age-appropriate transformation". At present, the layout of the hard sleeper compartment is that there are two groups of three-layer sleepers in each compartment, and there are only two rest seats in the corresponding corridor, which is destined to have two passengers in each compartment without the opportunity to sit down. The relevant departments should take into account the special needs of the elderly with limited strength and reduced mobility as much as possible, and provide them with more convenience in the ticketing process and during the journey.
