It's almost the May Day holiday, the weather is warm, and many people are planning to go out. Recently, Zhang Ting, deputy chief physician of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Center of Hunan Provincial Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine (Affiliated Hospital of Hunan Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine), received a 36-year-old Mr. Hu (pseudonym) who underwent cardiac stent implantation surgery for "acute myocardial infarction".

This patient, who originally loved to travel, did not dare to work, did not dare to go far after the operation, and even felt flustered and short of breath when he climbed the stairs every day. I ran back and forth to the hospital for fear that I would "infarct again".

After a detailed medical history and systematic evaluation, Dr. Zhang Ting patiently instructed him that after the implantation of the cardiac stent, as long as he adheres to the standardized medication treatment, coupled with dietary control, changes in bad habits, appropriate exercise, etc., that is, after achieving comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation, he can travel with a stent and regain a happy life!

Don't let the "stent" stumble! About cardiac stents, these are 3 things you must know

1. Will the heart stent shift and fall off during exercise?

In the cardiovascular medicine outpatient department, there are not a few patients like Mr. Hu. Many patients will have such and such questions: "Will the stent in the heart shift and fall off during exercise?" and "Can I still fly with a stent if I have coronary heart disease?"

Dr. Zhang Ting said that when a heart stent is inserted, a large tension is needed to combine the stent with the blood vessel wall, embed it into the blood vessel wall, and make it fixed. Over time, the coronary endothelium begins to wrap around the stent, a process called "stent endothelialization", as if the stent "grew into the flesh".

Usually the time for complete endothelialization of this stent is 3~6 months, so whether it is a severe cough or strenuous exercise, the stent will generally not shift.

2. How long after stent implantation can I start exercising?

Professor Zhou Bing, director of the Second Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, introduced that after PCI (cardiac stent implantation), cardiac rehabilitation can be started on the second day without complications.

Patients without significant left heart impairment can sit up the day after surgery, such as going to the toilet, taking care of themselves, feeding themselves, and moving around the bedside, while patients with acute myocardial infarction are advised to stay in bed for three days.

After three days, you can get out of bed and move appropriately, and the amount of exercise should be gradually increased. If angina, tachycardia, or significant ECG changes occur after activity, bed rest should be prolonged.

3. How to perform exercise rehabilitation after cardiac stenting?

For the form of exercise, Dr. Zhang Ting introduced that exercise rehabilitation after cardiac stent surgery is generally divided into three stages.

Phase I: Inpatient rehabilitation phase

Exercises include passive activity, turning over and sitting up, sitting alone on the side of the bed, walking around the bed, walking in the hallway for 5-10 minutes, going up a staircase, etc.

Phase II: Outpatient rehabilitation phase

30-90 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise, 3 times a week, with ECG and blood pressure monitoring, including aerobic exercise, resistance exercise, and flexibility exercises such as brisk walking, jogging, and tai chi, are started 2-5 weeks after surgery.

If people exercise at home, they can walk and bike every day, and the intensity of the exercise is usually set to 15 to 20 times in addition to the resting heart rate.

Phase III: Community Rehabilitation Stage

The main thing is to maintain the existing exercise habits and follow up regularly.

In addition, Tai Chi and Baduanjin are also very beneficial exercises for patients with coronary heart disease stents.

It is safe for patients after cardiac stent surgery to follow the doctor's instructions to do a moderate amount of reasonable exercise, and it can also significantly improve exercise capacity and cardiopulmonary function, and improve the quality of life.
