Urban gardens on the rooftops of several post offices

Rooftop gardens are common, but in Manhattan, the center of the universe, it's hard to find a two-acre rooftop garden. This is the largest accessible rooftop garden in all of Manhattan, located on the roof of the 1933 Morgan North USPS Mail Processing and Distribution Center in the Chelsea area, the size of the famous Gramercy Park.

Nearly 2 acres of open space, located atop 7 floors on the west side of New York City's most vibrant commercial district, are at the heart of the facility's reinvention and rebranding, reflecting the landscape design requirements of the evolving contemporary workplace. Designed to foster a clear sense of community, the gathering areas are arranged in a way that resembles the 'town center' of a traditional city.

Similar in size to a neighborhood park, the rooftop garden serves as a tranquil urban habitat and is an ideal remedy for a busy work environment. The idea is to be a true urban park, not just a few simple shrubs, with large trees such as red maple, sycamores and tulipwood, expected to be 40-50 feet tall and wide, enough to make the neighboring High Line look quite low.

Passive and semi-active spaces are integrated in a range of 'natural landscape types': woodland forests, upland scrublands and wildflower meadows. The landscape design accommodates individual retreats, group meetings, and large event spaces, with curvilinear paths winding through undulating terrain, shade trees, flowering shrubs, and ornamental ground covers, connecting small nodes of stop and gathering. The interweaving structure of woodland, shrubs and meadows creates a mystical contrast to the surrounding urban landscape backdrop.

The landscape just wraps every aspect。

Urban gardens on the rooftops of several post offices

In Chicago, 601W converted the old 1921 post office to Graham, Anderson, Probst and White into offices, and Hoerr Schaudt designed The Meadow, a rooftop garden. The 3.5-acre rooftop garden is the largest in Chicago and features recreational spaces as well as two pickleball courts and a basketball court.

What was once an empty and barren roof, with a few mechanical lofts scattered around, is now a green, and the planting plan emphasizes a combination of straight and broken lines. Hoerr Schaudt explains that the geometric design of the meadows and gardens was inspired by the Art Deco motifs of the high-rise buildings surrounding the site, as well as the abstract forms of wheat fields and other crops. The designers also dealt with load-bearing constraints, reinforcing the roof in local locations to support the sports field and large gathering area. This approach achieves a harmonious separation of activity types, a partition between active uses (active, aggregated) and passive uses (quiet, natural) through the rational organization of space.

Due to load and cover constraints, soil depths are generally 15 cm, so plant species are limited to ornamental grasses, perennials and bulbs. While it sounds like a draconian restriction, it is anything but the view from the garden, with 41,000 plants of more than 50 varieties planted on the roof.
