How long does it take for wet garbage to degrade with different plastic bags?

author:Shangguan News

In people's daily life, a lot of garbage will be generated, and it is also a part of life to carry garbage bags to throw garbage, but in fact, throwing garbage is also particular, and it is not just thrown into the trash can and it ends.

Since July 2019, the "Shanghai Municipal Household Waste Management Regulations" (hereinafter referred to as the "Regulations") have been officially implemented. The Ordinance requires that wet garbage be disposed of in broken bags.

What is "broken bag" treatment?

The so-called "broken bag" is to break the garbage bag containing wet garbage, put the wet garbage into the wet garbage can, and put the broken garbage bag into the dry garbage can.

So why do we need to break the bags of wet garbage? We can do a simple comparative experiment to verify the necessity of broken bags of wet waste.

Start by preparing the materials needed for the experiment:

1. Biodegradable plastic bags with biodegradable logos

2. Ordinary plastic bags

3. Simulate vegetable leaves of wet garbage

4. Strains and water required for fermentation

The first set of experimental procedures

Pour the prepared bacteria and water into the biodegrader, wait for 48 hours for it to fully ferment, and add the prepared wet garbage, degradable plastic bags and non-degradable plastic bags.

After 48 hours, the wet garbage has been basically degraded, but no obvious degradation has occurred whether it is a biodegradable plastic bag or an ordinary plastic bag.

The experimental results show that even if biodegradable plastic bags are used, they should be broken and classified as dry garbage and not mixed with wet garbage.

This is because the degradation time of degradable plastic bags is much longer than that of wet garbage, and if the two are treated together, degradable plastic bags will also cause serious damage to wet waste disposal equipment like ordinary plastic bags.

So, what is the difference between the degradation time of degradable plastic bags and ordinary plastic bags?

The second set of experimental procedures

In order to reduce the influence of the volume and size of the plastic bags on the degradation experiment of plastic materials, the two plastic bags were cut and added to the biodegradation machine again.

After a long period of records, the degradable bioplastic bags after the bag breaking treatment have been effectively degraded, but the ordinary plastic bags, even after a long period of 180 days, have not produced natural degradation.

The experimental results show that the use of biodegradable plastic bags instead of ordinary plastic bags can indeed greatly reduce white pollution.

This is because compared with ordinary plastic bags, the main difference between degradable plastic bags is that the former does not contain the PE component in general garbage bags, but is mainly made of lignin and biodegradable plastics extracted from straw.

However, biodegradable plastic bags require strict conditions (water, temperature, reactor, etc.) to complete degradation.

For the sake of lucid waters and lush mountains and a better tomorrow, we should do a good job in garbage classification, slow down and work as soon as possible, use degradable plastic bags to clear the garbage, and strictly abide by the detailed rules for the classification of domestic waste in Shanghai.
