On April 18, the "Seminar on Digitization and Activation of Ancient Books and Illustrated Dictionaries" was held at the National Library of China. At this seminar, the "Chinese Ancient Books Illustrated Dictionary Resource Library" was officially launched.
The purpose of this seminar is to thoroughly implement the "Opinions on Promoting the Work of Ancient Books in the New Era" issued by the Office of the Central Committee and the Office of the State Council, promote the implementation of the national cultural digitization strategy, and actively promote the transformation and upgrading of the activation and utilization of ancient books.
Chen Ying, Secretary of the Party Committee and Deputy Director of the National Library, Gao Shusheng, former first-level inspector and deputy director of the Cultural System Reform and Development Office of the Central Propaganda Department, Wei Yushan, President of the China Academy of Press and Publication, Zhang Longjiang, second-level inspector and director of the Ancient Books Division of the Publishing Bureau of the Central Propaganda Department, and Zhu Chunlei, director of the Supervision and Management Division of the Public Service Department of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, attended the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Wei Chong, deputy director of the National Library of China.
In her speech, Chen Ying emphasized that the current work of ancient books has ushered in new opportunities for innovation and development, and under the social background that cultural digitization has become a national strategy and the construction of the national smart library system has entered the fast lane, the digitization of ancient books in the mainland should bloom with new charm in the new era and contribute to the construction of the modern civilization of the Chinese nation. The innovative exploration of activation and utilization will better promote the work of ancient books in the new era, so that the precious cultural heritage will radiate new vitality and vitality in the new era, and make our contemporary contributions!
In the expert seminar session, Gao Shusheng, Wei Yushan, Professor Zhou Xuanlong of the Department of Chinese of Tsinghua University, Zhang Jiuzhen, Director of the Department of Information Management and Dean of the Publishing Research Institute of Peking University, and Chen Hongyan, Director of the Ancient Books Museum of the National Library, respectively made special reports on the topics of "systematically promoting the digitization of ancient books", "guiding the publication of ancient books with 'double creation'", "rapidly promoting the digitization of ancient books and effectively improving the utilization rate of documents", "data basis for the activation and utilization of library resources", and "discovering the life of ancient people from the illustrations of ancient books".
After the special report, the participating experts had a heated discussion on the digitization and activation of ancient books, affirmed the active exploration of the digitization of ancient books and the innovative practice of integrating into the construction of the national cultural big data system, and put forward suggestions and expectations for actively promoting the sorting of documents in the collection and the regenerative protection and inheritance and utilization of ancient books.
The "Illustrated Dictionary of Chinese Ancient Books" is a phased construction achievement of the state-owned capital operating budget expenditure project of the central cultural enterprises undertaken by the National Library Press, "Construction of National Cultural Big Data System - In-depth Indexing of Illustrated Dictionaries of Chinese Traditional Culture and Construction of Material Database Based on the Collation of Classics of Past Dynasties". The project collects and sorts out image materials with traditional Chinese cultural characteristics from a large number of traditional cultural classics, and analyzes and recreates traditional pattern images through description, indexing and classification, forming new image materials and providing new creative resources for the cultural and creative industries. In the future, we can also combine new technologies and new products to carry out in-depth development and utilization of these image materials, and promote the innovative development of cultural products and services.
Up to now, the "Illustrated Dictionary of Chinese Ancient Books" project has completed a total of 105,000 in-depth indexing of traditional cultural images and more than 2,600 vector drawings of traditional pattern elements. On this basis, the construction team carried out vectorization processing of the extracted traditional pattern elements, uploaded more than 1,000 pattern materials to the underlying association system, applied for the International Standard Association Identifier (ISLI) code, and uploaded the resources to the "Data Supermarket" of the trading platform of Shenzhen Cultural Property Exchange and Jiangsu Cultural Property Exchange, and successfully reached a transaction.
After the completion of the "Chinese Ancient Books Illustrated Dictionary Resource Library", it was selected into the "2023 Digital Publishing Quality Selection and Recommendation Plan of the National Press and Publication Administration" and the "2023 Publishing Industry Science and Technology and Standard Innovation Demonstration Project of the National Press and Publication Administration" in 2023. As one of the first units to access the national cultural private network and assemble the underlying association integration system, the National Library Press has realized a key step in the "physical distribution and logical association" of the national cultural big data system.
