The art of making inkstones
Duan inkstone, the heavy treasure of the four treasures of Chinese scholars, was named because it was produced in ancient Duanzhou (now Zhaoqing, Guangdong). Since the Song Dynasty, it has been used as a tribute and ranks first among all the inkstones in China. Duan inkstone is regarded as the treasure of inkstone by Chinese literati and ink writers in the past dynasties for its delicate, moisturizing, unique stone quality without damage, brilliant and colorful stone patterns, ghostly axe knife, ingenious carving, and oily and shiny ink developed by the research and insects.
In 2004, the China Light Industry Federation and the China Scholars Four Treasures Association awarded Zhaoqing the title of "China Inkstone". In 2006, the production skills of Duan inkstone were included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage projects, and in 2018, they were selected into the first batch of national traditional craft revitalization catalog.
Tanjia cake making skills
Tanjia cake, also known as mille-feuille cake, is the traditional festival food of the people on the Xijiang River in Zhaoqing, and it is also a common gift given by the Tan people to each other. During the Spring Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival and other festivals, the Tan family makes mille-feuille cakes to worship the gods and ancestors, and its production skills reflect the unique living customs and ethnic culture of the water people.
There are two kinds of salty and sweet cakes, the salty cakes are made of sticky rice, sesame seeds, peanuts, shrimp and pork, and the sweet cakes are made of sticky rice and white sugar. The steaming process of Tanjia cake is to put the cake in a pot of boiling water, pour the sticky rice milk evenly on top, and then steam it for 2-3 minutes over a fierce fire. This is repeated up to 36 floors, which means "long and long, step by step".
In 2012, the Tanjia cake making technique was approved by the Guangdong Provincial People's Government to be included in the list of provincial intangible cultural heritage.
Soy sauce brewing technology(Zhaoqing soy sauce brewing technology)
Zhaoqing soy sauce brewing technology is a traditional skill inherited by the Liang family in Duanzhou District, Zhaoqing City for more than 100 years, and the process includes koji-making, natural drying and fermentation, cellar aging, etc., and brewing high-quality soy sauce from raw materials such as raw soybeans. In 2014, Guangdong Xiangmanyuan Food Co., Ltd. was selected as "Guangdong Time-honored Brand", and in 2020, it was selected as "Key Agricultural Leading Enterprise in Guangdong Province", rated as "National AAA Tourist Attraction", and became one of the stops of the "Guangdong Industrial Tourism Boutique Route - Zhaoqing Cultural Drunk Experience Tour" jointly released by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism and the Guangdong Provincial Department of Industry and Information. In 2022, it was approved by the Guangdong Provincial People's Government to be included in the list of representative items of provincial intangible cultural heritage.
Zhaoqing self-striking bell making skills
The self-striking clock is named because it can automatically ring the clock to tell the time. China's first mechanical chiming clock was made in 1584 by Matteo Ricci in Zhaoqing. The birth of the mechanical self-striking clock has made the mainland move from the era of "copper kettle dripping" to the era of science and technology of mechanical clock timing.
The production process is divided into more than 40 processes, integrating sculpture, copper art, iron art, ceramics, wood carving, inkstone carving, inlay, painting and many other intangible cultural heritage skills.
In 2021, with the approval of the Zhaoqing Municipal People's Government, the Zhaoqing chiming bell making technique was included in the list of representative items of municipal intangible cultural heritage.
