Banks become the new siege of young people, some crying and fleeing, others desperately squeezing in

author:Half two finances

"If you have connections in the industry, you won't stay at the counter, right?" a line from the hit TV series "City within a City" made many young people who newly joined the bank break their defenses. A teller is a must for most newcomers to the bank. The reporter of Beiqing Daily found that many young people left the bank crying not long after joining the bank because they couldn't stand the hardships of the grassroots work in the bank, and related topics such as "young people fled the bank" and "Did you resign from the bank today?" have rushed to the hot search from time to time in recent years; on the other hand, the spring and autumn recruitment of various banks are still the "sweet and sweet" in the eyes of fresh graduates, and a large number of graduates from famous schools at home and abroad have tried their best to get a bank offer. People in the city want to get out, people outside the city want to come in, and the banks have become the new siege for young people.

What are the unique slots of banking work?

Most people want to quit their jobs because they work too much overtime, earn less money, are stressed, and have no hope of promotion. But a number of young people who have quit their jobs from banks say that they are not just leaving the bank for these reasons, because you must have encountered these problems in other industries as well. What made them finally "make up their minds" was actually some unique slots in the grassroots work of the bank.

The teller job is trivial and repetitive

Li Jing (pseudonym), who has a 985 bachelor's degree, worked in the bank for two months, and resigned decisively before the probationary period. In August last year, Li Jing, who graduated from university for a year, participated in the social recruitment of the provincial capital city branch of a large state-owned bank and was hired. Like the fresh graduates, Li Jing, who has no banking work experience, was assigned to a branch to start from the grassroots level.

Li Jing has been lively and cheerful since she was a child, loves beauty and dress, and has a strong curiosity about all kinds of new things. At first, she felt that the most unpleasant thing was that she had to wear a proper uniform every day, "The beautiful clothes at home have become decorations." When she finished her training and officially became a teller, she realized that having to wear a uniform was actually nothing.

"In fact, my colleagues are very good, and they take good care of our new employees, but I just hate to do this kind of brainless work, all business is a standardized process, one board and one eye, must be operated in strict accordance with the regulations, and there is a camera 360-degree monitoring without dead ends, I feel that this kind of work is really meaningless. Li Jing submitted her resignation more than ten days after she went to the counter.

Zhang Li (pseudonym), who has been a teller for three years, chose to resign because of the intensity of the teller's work. Zhang Li's outlets are in old residential areas, and there are many elderly customers who handle counter business. She goes out at 7:00 every morning, takes a 40-minute bus to the outlet, first goes to her workstation to prepare, and then has a morning meeting. It officially opened at 8:57 a.m., and from that moment on, it basically maintained the posture of not drinking water or going to the bathroom, until one or two o'clock in the afternoon. The action is to keep raising your hand, receiving customers, burying your head in your work, sending customers away, and moving on to the next one. At noon, the bank will take turns closing a counter to let the teller go to dinner, and if there are many customers, it may be delayed until 15:00. The teller eats like a war, and he has to come back in half an hour at most, and then continue to repeat the familiar set of actions. In addition, they often participate in business training, learn new regulations and new products, and sometimes go to the community around the branch to carry out marketing activities. Zhang Li said that almost every day she can only get home from work at 8 o'clock, and she has to go home at 7 o'clock at the earliest, and basically only has one day off a week, and she is so tired that she can't go anywhere on the day of rest, and she just wants to lie at home.

Being scolded by unreasonable customers to "doubt life"

A number of people from the bank who have worked as tellers told a reporter from Beiqing Daily that lumbar spine pain and kidney stones are common diseases for tellers. The hard work itself is actually acceptable, because young people have to be trained, but what they are most afraid of is to run into unreasonable customers, and they must endure grievances.

"I've grown up so big, my parents haven't said anything serious to me, but I was scolded by customers and doubted my life. Xiaole, a returnee master, joined a bank last summer and also started as a teller. One day, a customer went to Xiaole's counter to print a detailed list of personal business, because the customer himself could not describe it clearly, and the two receipts typed by Xiaole were not what the customer wanted. So the customer yelled at Xiaole outside the counter, scolding Xiaole with all kinds of unbearable swear words for wasting her time. Subsequently, the two supervisors came to understand the situation, and the customer asked for a replacement while also insulting and attacking them.

In this case, all the bank work, including Xiaole, still communicated politely with the customer in a normal tone, and also helped the customer to do business in the shortest possible time. Unexpectedly, after the customer went back, he made three complaint calls in a row, saying that he was so angry with the attitude of the three of them that he had a heart attack and demanded that the bank be responsible.

The leaders of the sub-branch asked Xiaole to apologize to the customer. Xiaole believes that he is not wrong, and would rather resign than apologize. The colleagues around him all persuaded Xiaole that it is common to encounter this kind of person at work in the bank, and he got used to it after a few experiences. "But what are I used to?" Xiaole, who was still on probation, left the bank in anger.

There are many rules and fines in the bank

Chen Lin (pseudonym), who has worked in a large bank for several years and has been transferred from tellers, also chose to resign from the bank last year. She felt that there were too many rules and regulations of the bank, and there were too many personal requirements and constraints on employees, which made it more and more difficult for her to accept. For example, you have to apply for approval for outbound travel; you have to submit your own credit report and bank card statement every six months, even if it is a large transfer between relatives, you must explain it in detail; you have to visit your home at least once a year, and you have to find your family to understand all aspects of the situation.

Chen Lin said that she understands very well that it is necessary for the financial industry to strengthen the management of employees and the healthy development of the industry, but for individuals, some practices are really unacceptable.

Li Zhen (pseudonym), a teller who was already preparing to report his resignation, was also "scared" by the bank's rules and regulations, saying that he was "trembling all day long, afraid of making mistakes". Li Zhen said that the teller's mistake is not only the most obvious book error of long and short money, but also the irregularity of customer documents, grooming, and poor polite greetings may make mistakes. As long as it is a mistake, it must be dealt with according to the regulations, and the salary is not much, and sometimes it can be fined hundreds a month.

Paying a high price for training Some people are trying to squeeze into a bank job

While many young people are decisively fleeing the bank, there are also a large number of younger people who are "sharpening their heads" and wanting to enter the bank.

At present, it is the peak recruitment season of "Golden Three, Silver and Fourth", and many banks have launched spring campus recruitment, which is open to domestic and foreign college graduates who will graduate from January 2023 to July 2024.

On major social platforms, you can see a large number of posts exchanging bank online applications, written exams and interview experiences, and many fresh graduates spend high prices to find professional training institutions in order to successfully join the bank.

A reporter from Beiqing Daily saw that on an Internet education platform focusing on the field of bank recruitment examinations, the price of courses for bank written exams and interviews is 7980 yuan, only for the written test 5980 yuan, only for the interview 3980 yuan, the platform's one-stop service gold card membership price is as high as 11800 yuan, not only including written test, interview counseling, but also resume refinement, job search planning and industry skills services. It is understood that most of the graduates who spend money to take classes for applying for banks do not have a background in prestigious schools, and there are more double non-bachelor degrees.

In fact, banks have always been favored by graduates of prestigious schools. In November last year, a list of interviews for the second round of autumn recruitment of the Beijing branch of a large state-owned bank was exposed, including 16 graduates from Tsinghua University, 16 graduates from Peking University, 3 graduates from Fudan University, and some graduates from Cambridge University, Yale University, London University of Economics and other famous foreign universities.

Wang Ling (pseudonym), a master's degree from a 985 university, joined a large state-owned bank in a first-tier city as a management trainee in 2021. Wang Ling worked in the branch for two years, first as a teller for half a year, then as a financial manager for one year, and then became a corporate account manager last year. In October last year, Wang Ling had the idea of resigning, and the resignation letter was written. Because at that time, she felt that she had little hope of returning to the branch, and the marketing indicators for the corporate account manager were complex and heavy, and there were often drinking parties and dinners, which made her very uncomfortable.

Under the persuasion of the leaders of the branch, Wang Ling persevered for another two months, and finally waited for the opportunity at the beginning of this year and was transferred to the corporate business department of the branch.

"After working at the outlets during that time, I'm content now. Wang Ling said that she likes the work content very much, the work pressure is not so great, and she can learn a lot of things, except for the busiest time at the end of each quarter, she has to work overtime, and she can usually get off work at six or seven o'clock. "I'm not so anxious anymore, I still have time to go to the gym in the office building at noon, and everyone is beautiful. ”

Wang Ling advises newcomers who are eager to leave their jobs from the bank to think twice. It must be very hard to work at the grassroots level, and there will be some places that you don't fit into, but the banking system is huge and there are many jobs, and there will be a lot of room for future development. Looking at the society, the bank's income is still good, Wang Ling revealed that when she worked for two years, she had a deposit of nearly 200,000 yuan.

"How many jobs can be as stable and close to home as a bank now?" Xiaohua, who has a bachelor's degree from an ordinary university, is an only child, and she was recently admitted to a local bank in her hometown, and she is very happy. Xiaohua knows that his academic qualifications are not dominant, and the public examination is becoming more and more difficult, and the bank job is stable in nature and has a high income, which is already a very good job in his hometown.

How to choose in the face of siege?

Wang Yanxing, a senior researcher at the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University of Chinese, pointed out that this phenomenon of "people from the outside want to go in, and people from the inside want to come out" can be called "bank siege phenomenon". There are two main reasons for this phenomenon: First, the normal flow of personnel in banks, including those who change jobs at high levels and those who are eliminated due to the survival of the fittest; second, the income, social status, and personal development prospects of bank employees are quite attractive, and the threshold for banks to enter is still very high, and it is difficult for personnel to enter.

Mr. Huang, the president of a Beijing branch of a large state-owned bank, told a reporter from Beiqing Daily that all the graduates recruited by his branch, whether they are from Peking University and Tsinghua University, or from ordinary universities, whether they have a bachelor's degree or a master's degree, must start as tellers. During the probation period, there is only the most basic salary for the position, and after becoming a regular, you can enjoy the performance bonus. The bonuses for positions such as account managers mainly depend on personal performance, and the pressure on tellers to generate income such as deposits is small, and the performance bonuses are mainly linked to the current quarter efficiency of the branch. According to his observation, not all highly educated newcomers are in a hurry to transfer or transfer. There is a female student who graduated from a famous university with a master's degree and has been working as a teller for many years, mainly because the KPI pressure of tellers is relatively small, and she herself likes stable and simple work content and interpersonal relationships.

Mr. Huang believes that each industry has its own advantages and disadvantages, "your honey is arsenic", and it is normal for someone to flee and someone to enter the same industry. However, when young people make career planning, it is best to fully understand the industry first, and then choose according to their own personality characteristics and life aspirations, and not listen to the experience and opinions of outsiders.

Dong Ximiao, chief researcher of Zhaolian, believes that the frequent flow of talents in the banking industry reflects more the deepening of the financial system and the rise of new business formats, rather than indicating that banks are "no longer working". Young people should have a clear understanding of the work of the bank and find it acceptable before choosing to work in the bank. If you just hold the idea that it is difficult to find a job first, or if you don't work for a long time and find that you are not satisfied, you will leave quickly, in fact, it is a waste of your time and costs, and it has also caused a certain loss to the bank. Of course, banks should also reflect on whether job descriptions should be more specific, and the plans for talent training or job placement should also be fully understood by young people.
