1/ The Bitcoin halving is coming in a short period of time, bringing strong activity to the ecosystem, especially in terms of ordinal numbers and runes.
2/ Launched by @rodarmor in January 2023, Ordinals has significantly increased on-chain data storage capacity, thereby driving the popularity of inscriptions. This innovation has led to the widespread application of systems, such as the BRC-20 and Runes, the main differences of which are shown in the table below.
3/ With the Bitcoin halving approaching and the release of the Runes protocol in April, Ordinals' trading volume has increased exponentially. It is worth noting that the trading volume of Bitcoin has almost equaled that of Ethereum over the past month, with @okx and @MagicEden becoming the main trading markets. 4/ The most recognizable NFT collectibles on Ordinals include @nodemonkes, @BitcoinPuppets, and @QuantumCatsXYZ. In addition to having a large community support, the owners of these collectibles are the main beneficiaries of various airdrop campaigns, such as @runestone_ETH, @rune_coin, and @PupsToken.
5/ Some of these airdrops are of considerable value, creating significant wealth effects for the Ordinals/Runes ecosystem. Similar to WIF, this phenomenon fosters the formation of a loyal community, further advancing the narrative. As a result, the activities surrounding Runes Protocol have attracted a lot of attention and excitement.
6/ Runes Protocol, launched by @rodarmor, aims to be an alternative to Ordinals. The protocol engages users and developers in the following ways:
- Adopt a UTXO-based model (closer to Bitcoin) to simplify system complexity;
- Compared to the BRC-20, it has lower data and storage requirements.
7/ The Pre-Rune project, which was involved in the early days of the Runes protocol, has recently received more and more attention. Holders of @rune_coin can mine RSIC runes, level up, or share their positions with other miners in the hope of getting more runes after the halving. RSIC's pre-sale campaign is underway on @whalesmarket.
8/ @PupsToken is the main meme coin in the rune realm. Part of the supply has been distributed to holders of @BitcoinPuppets and opium through airdrops, thus building a strong community in the early days. Interoperability with Solana further increases its popularity with @Multibit_Bridge support.
9/ We predict that as the halving time approaches, many protocols will choose to launch or migrate to Runes. Despite concerns about fragmentation and the lack of a unified standard, we believe this provides a solid foundation for enhanced use cases and will attract as much attention as the BRC-20 did when it was launched.
