The 76 new self-breeding varieties on display are the new varieties of cut flowers cultivated by the International Flower Technology Innovation Center using efficient breeding technology system, mainly multi-headed cut flower varieties, most of the new varieties have elegant fragrance, rich flower color, flower uniformity and openness, and the biggest feature is that the flower type inherits and carries forward the characteristics of the graceful atmosphere of the ancient Chinese varieties in the mainland, which is in line with the aesthetics of the Chinese people.
In 2022, the planting area of fresh cut flowers in Yunnan will be 350,000 mu, of which the moon season accounts for 40% of the total area of fresh cut flowers. However, most of the flower varieties on the market are cultivated by foreign breeders, which restricts the development of the industry. The breeding and promotion of new varieties of flowers with independent intellectual property rights has become a bottleneck that needs to be broken through urgently in the current flower industry.

On the basis of deepening cooperation, in 2023, the Chenggong District Government will build a supporting commercial building to build the Dounan Flower Science and Technology Innovation Center. The "Yunnan Provincial Seed Industry Joint Laboratory - Flower Seed Industry Laboratory" was introduced, and a world-class high-level breeding 4.0 innovation platform was built during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period. After the project is completed and put into use, by 2025, an innovation team will be formed, provincial high-level talents will be trained, graduate students and technical personnel will be trained every year, new flower products recognized by the market will be introduced and cultivated, the transformation of scientific and technological achievements in the seed industry will be realized, flower entrepreneurship projects will be incubated, innovative enterprises will be cultivated, and flower industry chain enterprises will be introduced, and breeding systems such as flower genomics, phenomics, gene editing, and intelligent design breeding will be gradually established and improved.
The Flower Research Institute of Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences is the first flower breeding research institution in Yunnan and the head breeding institution in China. In 2019, it reached a cooperation with the Chenggong District Government and landed the International Flower Technology Innovation Center project in Dounan, using the new varieties of cut flowers cultivated by the efficient breeding technology system, building a public breeding platform for cut flowers, and collecting and preserving more than 1,000 excellent varieties of cut flowers from the Netherlands, such as Interplant, Dümmen Orange, and Meang from France. In 2023, 20 new varieties will be selected and declared, more than 3,000 hybrid combinations will be completed every year, and more than 50 new varieties will be declared annually, and in-depth cooperation with many domestic flower enterprises and modern agricultural industrial parks will realize the rapid transformation of scientific research achievements and greatly shorten the time from breeding to market promotion of flowers.
