AMD has released a new generation of AI PC chips

On April 16, AMD announced new products that expand its portfolio in the commercial mobile and desktop AI PC space, delivering superior productivity and premium AI and connected experiences for enterprise users. The new RyzenPRO 8040 series is the most advanced x86 processor built for business laptops and mobile workstations. In addition, AMD announced the Ryzen™ PRO 8000 Series Desktop Processors, the first AI-enabled desktop processors for enterprise users3 designed to deliver leading-edge performance at low power consumption.

By leveraging CPUs, GPUs, and dedicated on-chip neural processing units (NPUs), the new Ryzen AI processors deliver more dedicated AI processing power than previous generations, with up to 16 dedicated NPU TOPS (trillions of operations per second) and up to 39 system TOPS. Business PCs equipped with the latest Ryzen™ AI processors will help transform the user experience, delivering next-generation performance for AI-enabled collaboration, content creation, and data and analytics workloads. With the addition of AMD PRO technology, IT managers can unlock enterprise-grade manageability features to simplify IT operations and complete PC deployments across the organization faster, with built-in security features for chip-to-cloud defense against sophisticated attacks, and unprecedented stability, reliability, and platform longevity of enterprise software.

"AMD offers the broadest portfolio of AI technologies to meet the needs of the modern enterprise. "As we continue to expand our leadership in AI PCs, we are bringing richer features and greater efficiency to a wide range of desktop and mobile PCs," said Jack Huynnh, senior vice president and general manager of the Compute and Graphics Group at AMD. ”

Empower high-performance professional laptops and mobile workstations

With up to eight high-performance cores, advanced 4nm technology and the "Zen 4" architecture, AMD Ryzen PRO 8040 Series mobile processors deliver a combined 30% performance boost for the most demanding mobile workstation applications. With select models of AMD Ryzen AI and powerful AMD RDNA 3 graphics integrated on-chip, the Ryzen Pro 8040 Series delivers up to 72% faster video conferencing performance and up to 84% lower power consumption than Intel Core Ultra 7 165U processors, with or without AI experience enabled.

PCs powered by Ryzen™ Pro 8040 Series processors will be the first to feature WiFi-7 technology, providing cutting-edge networking capabilities and becoming the new industry standard.

The highest-end Ryzen 9 Pro 8945HS in the series has 8 cores, 16 threads, 24MB of cache, and Radeon 780M graphics. Designed for resource-intensive applications such as technical computing, multimedia content creation, and discrete graphics, these processors have the processing power to take on graphics-demanding workloads such as 3D rendering, video encoding, and photo editing.

The new Ryzen PRO 8040 series mobile processors are expected to be available from OEM partners, including HP and Lenovo, starting in Q2 2024.

The world's first AI desktop processor

Ryzen™ Pro 8000 series processors are equipped with the first dedicated AI engine for select desktops to deliver immersive AI experiences with high performance and efficiency. The chips are built on a leading-edge 4nm process and have up to 8 high-performance Zen 4 cores. Compared to the Intel Core i7 14700 processor, commercial desktops with Ryzen™ Pro 8000 series deliver up to 47% faster performance and up to three times better graphics performance in select tests.

Desktops powered by Ryzen™ Pro 8000 series processors support DDR5 and PCIe 4 for high-speed data transfer, smoother desktop workflows, high-speed data transfer, faster access to business-critical applications and data, and Wi-Fi 7 networking on some models.

The highest-spec processor in the series is the Ryzen 8700G, which has 8 high-performance cores and 16 threads, 24MB cache, and integrated AMD Radeon 780M graphics. In tests against the competition, the Ryzen 8700G delivers up to 19% better performance while consuming less power, giving professionals the performance they need for every workload.

The new Ryzen™ PRO 8000 series desktop processors are expected to be available on platforms from OEM partners HP and Lenovo, as well as select channel partners, starting in Q2 2024.

In February, AMD announced the next generation of Ryzen 8000G series desktop processors, which will introduce dedicated AI neural network processors (NPUs) to provide consumers with more AI capabilities and boost productivity, efficiency, and advanced collaboration. The 8000G series is based on a 4nm process.

Both AMD and Intel are touting AI PCs as a new era in the industry. AMD President Victor Peng said in February that the AI PC market will continue to expand and will accelerate in the second half of 2024.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said at a previous press conference: "We think AI PCs will be the star product in the coming year. ”

At the same time, major chipmakers are racing to release more efficient and powerful AI chips. Nvidia unveiled its new GPUs in early January, and the company expects new AI applications to emerge next year that will take full advantage of the performance of its products. Microsoft is expected to release Windows 12 later this year, which can further leverage AI chips.

Gartner, a U.S. consulting firm, estimates that AI PC shipments will account for 22% of all PC markets by 2024, with 54.5 million AI PCs by the end of the year.
