Moment Factory has set a new milestone in its history as a multidisciplinary studio dedicated to creating innovative multimedia experiences through cutting-edge creativity and technical know-how. AURA Invalides is a 50-minute immersive experience that combines video mapping, lighting, special effects, orchestral music, and sound design to celebrate the architectural and historical heritage of one of Paris' most famous landmarks: the Dome of Les Invalides.
The project began in 2019 and was initiated by the cultural operator Cultival. After seeing the AURA experience of Notre-Dame de Montreal and the creativity of the Moment Factory, Cultival commissioned the multimedia studio to create France's first AURA experience at Les Invalides.
Aura Invalides was designed and produced by Moment Factory in collaboration with the Army Museum – Les Invalides Hotel. This is the result of a long period of research and collaboration. The Moment Factory team spent more than two years creating a multimedia and immersive experience that complemented the grandeur of the Dome of Les Invalides.
Aura Invalides is a stunning experience that brings the Invalides dome to life when night falls, bringing to life the magic of lights, orchestral music, and video mapping, revealing its majestic beauty and rich heritage. Over the course of 50 minutes, visitors take part in a nighttime sensory exploration. Guided by the lights, they wander through the dome of Les Invalides and its six chapels, where never-before-seen spaces gradually become visible.
The Les Invalides dome showcases one of the most ambitious projection surfaces that Moment Factory has had the pleasure of working with. The technical challenge was enormous, with more than 45 million pixels mapped onto a 3,500-square-meter surface. Due to its architectural configuration, the echo of the building lasts for almost 10 seconds, which presents another challenge.
The Moment Factory team participated in this project to pay tribute to the genius of Jules Hardouin-Mansart and the genius of the architects, artists and craftsmen who created the Dome of Les Invalides. Their artistic preference is to reveal the spirit of the place, including its architectural beauty, reverberating memories, and the symbolism it conveys. Each scene is based on historical documents and designed with historical accuracy.
Divided into three chapters, the AURA Invalides experience invites visitors to explore the three fundamental aspects of the Invalides dome: building (Chapter 1), remembering (Chapter 2), and inspiring strength (Chapter 3).
The music for the project was created by Montreal studio Troublemakers in collaboration with the creative team at Moment Factory. The soundtrack was conceived and composed around three movements that represent the AURA Invalides experience, with each piece highlighting a different musical color to highlight the contrast of the iconic buildings.
