Consumption is the key engine driving economic growth and the huge potential of the mainland's economic development. Zhao Baige, vice chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the 12th National People's Congress and chairman of the Expert Committee of Landi International Think Tank, delivered a speech on the topic of "New Quality Productivity Gives Birth to New Consumption Reform". She believes that the new type of consumption is the inevitable result of economic and social development, and it is also a vivid portrayal of the new quality of productivity to promote consumption change. On the surface, it is manifested in the rapid development of the quantity, price, quality and technical content of supply, as well as the consumption scenarios of demand are more refined, the consumption channels are more convenient, and the consumption experience is more innovative. Consumer demand will continue to evolve, and there is still huge room for consumption mining. The key lies in how to unleash market momentum and use new quality productivity to stimulate new consumption. Zhao Baige believes that we should adhere to the guidance of consumer demand, attach importance to the innovation ability of private enterprises, release the potential of digital and green consumption, and accelerate the cultivation of key areas of new consumption, expand international cooperation, and shape the positive cycle of new productivity and new consumption.

At present, profound changes are taking place in the mainland's consumption structure, and what impact has this brought to the economy and society? How can we achieve structural reform and solve problems in order to adapt to the general trend of upgrading the consumption structure? Chi Fulin, president of the China (Hainan) Institute for Reform and Development, believes that as we enter a new stage of development, the contribution rate of consumption to economic growth has been continuously increasing. According to his analysis, the upgrading of the consumption structure of urban and rural residents on the mainland is at an important stage. If the proportion of service-oriented consumption of urban and rural residents in mainland China increases from about 45% in 2023 to more than 50% in 2030, it is expected to boost economic growth by at least 2 percentage points. Chi Fulin believes that the upgrading of the consumption structure is constrained by structural contradictions, and it is necessary to "establish first and then break down", focusing on solving the structural contradictions faced by the upgrading of the consumption structure with structural reform. Chi Fulin said that it is necessary to use structural reform to solve the structural contradictions between investment and consumption, growth and distribution, and urban and rural areas. Therefore, it is necessary to speed up the opening up of the service market, promote structural reform and policy adjustment, optimize the pattern of national income distribution, adjust the structure of national income distribution, increase the urbanization rate of the registered population, break the dual household registration system between urban and rural areas, and strengthen the construction of the rural public service system. He pointed out that "in the next 5-10 years, the upgrading of the consumption structure of urban and rural residents will show a general trend of acceleration. To a large extent, the certainty of the economy depends on the certainty of upgrading the consumption structure, and the focus of high-quality development lies in the formation of a new consumption-led growth model. Adapting to the trend of upgrading the consumption structure of urban and rural residents and intensifying structural reform will continue to unleash the potential of economic growth and achieve sustainable growth. ”

At the event, Kuang Xianming, vice president of the China (Hainan) Institute for Reform and Development and director of the RCEP Research Institute, released the "Unleashing the Huge Potential of Service-oriented Consumption: 2024 China Consumption Research Report" on behalf of the research team of the China Reform Institute, which reviewed the progress of the transformation of the mainland's consumption structure in 2023, analyzed the structural contradictions faced by the upgrading of the consumption structure, and put forward relevant suggestions for deepening structural reform to release the huge potential of service-oriented consumption.

The forum also held two roundtable dialogues on the topics of "China's Consumption and Economic Growth" and "Building a New Ecology of Shared Consumption". At the event, the full list of winners of the "Annual Consumer Influence" selection was also announced.
