Wu Shuang, the program planner of the China Film Archive, shared that "The Goddess" came out in 1934, with a history of 90 years, and it is a peak of current Chinese films in terms of photography, artistic style, and plot content. In 2014, the China Film Archive and the British Film Institute jointly carried out a digital restoration, and the restored version was broadcast live that day.
Why did he put so much effort into restoring "The Goddess"? In Wu Shuang's view, it is related to its artistic value. The film complicates the expression of the character of Ruan Lingyu's sister-in-law, the film does not present the world of black and white binary opposites, but more deeply excavates the image of the mother behind the character, and the film finally presents related topics about children's education and the situation of women, which also has a lot of room for discussion at the moment.
Zhao Lan, a professor at the School of Film, Television and Media of Sichuan Normal University, shared that in 1934, there was no Steadicam, no cutout green screen, and no hundreds of millions of technology, but it did not affect the movie "The Goddess" to tell a moving story. "I admire that at that time, China had begun to use movies to tell such a contradictory character in this way, which shows that the Shanghai culture at that time was quite open and tolerant, which also makes us sigh today. Zhao Lan also mentioned that the starring Ruan Lingyu is the biggest highlight of the movie "The Goddess": "She has never made a voice on the screen in her life, and it has always been a silent movie."
