On 12 April, the Intermediate People's Court of Datong City, Shanxi Province, openly tried the case of Sun Shutao, former member of the leading party group and vice chairman of the Shandong Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), for accepting bribes.
The Datong Municipal People's Procuratorate indicted and alleged: From 2001 to 2023, the defendant Sun Shutao took advantage of his position as deputy director of the Organization Department of the Shandong Provincial Party Committee, deputy secretary, mayor, and secretary of the Weihai Municipal Party Committee of Shandong Province, deputy secretary and mayor of the Jinan Municipal Party Committee of Shandong Province, and member and vice chairman of the party group of the Shandong Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. He provided assistance in business undertaking and job adjustments, and illegally accepted property totaling more than 129 million yuan, of which more than 73.38 million yuan had not been actually obtained at the time of the case. The procuratorate requested that Sun Shutao be investigated for criminal responsibility for the crime of accepting bribes.
During the trial, the procuratorate presented relevant evidence, the defendant Sun Shutao and his defender conducted cross-examination, the prosecution and defense fully expressed their opinions under the auspices of the court, and Sun Shutao made a final statement and pleaded guilty and repented in court. At the end of the trial, the court announced an adjournment and announced the verdict at a later date. More than 40 people, including deputies to the National People's Congress, members of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and people from all walks of life, attended the trial.
