Exhibition Foreword

Since the Qin and Han dynasties, Guangzhou has been an important port for China's overseas ocean-going trade. In the Tang Dynasty, Guangzhou was the starting point of the sea route "Guangzhou Tonghaiyi Road", and it was also the only city to set up a city envoy, and in the Song Dynasty, more than 50 countries and regions traded with Guangzhou. With the seasonal development of direct trade between China and the West in the Guangzhou port during the Ming and Qing dynasties, especially after the implementation of the one-stop trade system in Guangzhou in the 22nd year of Qianlong (1757), the Guangzhou port became the only port where Westerners could enter the Chinese coast. Economic exchanges and cultural dissemination are closely linked, Guangzhou has become an important window for the world to contact and understand China, and many new things, new industries and new export commodities with Western colors have also appeared in Guangzhou.

Tongcao painting (also known as "gourd painting") emerged in the late 18th and early 19th centuries at the port of Guangzhou. It has become an important export trade product, and it is also an important source of information for foreigners who arrive at Guangzhou port for commercial trade and cultural exchange activities to commemorate and understand China's customs and customs. Tongcao painting vividly shows the historical picture of Guangzhou's trade and trade with the rest of the world in the Qing Dynasty, which is not only an important witness to the cultural exchanges between China and the West, but also a pictorial historical material of Guangzhou's cultural history in the Qing Dynasty.

Co-organized by Shenzhen Wangye Museum, Eureka Griffin Clubhouse, Singapore, and Songshan Lake Wangye Museum, the exhibition features a total of 68 Tongcao paintings, covering a wide range of subjects, including ships, human figures, flowers and birds, embroidery, folklore, punishment, acrobatics, tea production, etc.

The special exhibition "Cantonese Meihua - Tongcao Painting in the 19th Century" is the first original and independently curated international cooperation exhibition launched by the Wangye Museum at Songshan Lake. The exhibition of these exquisite Tongcao paintings is also a new exploration of the cooperation between Dongguan Songshan Lake Wangye Museum and international art institutions. It will further deepen cross-regional cultural exchanges, mutual learning and cooperation in the field of humanities and arts.
