In the summer of 1941, Zhang Pengyun, an anti-Japanese fighter, was pursued by the Japanese army. Zou Lanying didn't say a word, and pulled Zhang Pengyun into the house and hid. After escaping safely, Zhang Pengyun said to Zou Lanying: "If you save me, take me as your son!" Since then, many anti-Japanese fighters have become frequent visitors to Zou Lanying's house, and they regard Zou Lanying's house as the liaison station of the anti-Japanese revolution, and call Zou Lanying "Ji Niang" together, which is the origin of the title of "old Ji Niang".

Zou Lanying not only entertained the anti-Japanese fighters as relatives, but also took the initiative to become an underground traffic officer, often going east to Jiangyin from Gaoshu Bridge, west to Danyang, south to Changzhou, and north to cross the Yangtze River. She disguised herself as a beggar woman, an incense burner, a poor village woman, and a small trader, sewed letters into the placket of her clothes, stuffed them under the soles of her shoes, and hid them in her buns. In 1947, the "old Ji Niang" was arrested and subjected to various tortures as many as 13 times, and she was strong and unyielding until she was liberated and freed. In October 1951, "Lao Ji Niang" was invited to attend the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and participate in the National Day ceremony, and was also received by Premier Zhou Enlai. Deng Yingchao wrote an inscription for her, calling her a "strong heroine".
