In 1953, Chen Geng founded the Harbin Military Engineering Institute. When recruiting students, the college is very strict in the selection of students, requiring all-round development of morality, intellect and physique. The party committee of the academy emphasized that "it is better to be short than overflowing", and the number of students enrolled often does not reach the planned number.
Among the first batch of trainees recruited by the Kazakh military industry was the nephew of Peng Dehuai, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission. When he applied for the college, due to his lack of education, Chen Geng considered that he was a lone seedling left by the Peng family and should be cultivated well, so he advocated admission. As a special issue, Chen Geng proposed it to the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of the college for discussion.
At the meeting, the Standing Committee members unanimously agreed that although Peng Dehuai's nephew was a beginner in Chinese, he studied hard and performed well, and unanimously agreed to let him enroll.
After Peng Dehuai learned about this, he criticized Chen Geng and said: "Your college admits all high school students, and you recruit him to destroy the college's enrollment system." You can't lower the entire admissions standard for his sake. Please let my nephew out of school. ”
Chen Geng saw that Mr. Peng was angry, and replied: "This is decided by the Standing Committee of the Party Committee, I personally say that it doesn't matter, let me understand the situation and listen to everyone's opinions." ”
As a result, Chen Geng submitted the matter to the Standing Committee for discussion. The Standing Committee members thought that although Mr. Peng's nephew was struggling to study, he could keep up with his hard work, so he said, "Don't quit." ”
Subsequently, the department also thought that Mr. Peng's nephew could keep up after studying hard. So Chen Geng didn't let him drop out of school.
Later, Peng Dehuai knew that his nephew had not dropped out of school, and once he saw Chen Geng, he mentioned this matter and said very angrily: "The enrollment system of the military academy cannot be destroyed, why do you want to recruit him into the school? I am farting when I speak, you immediately let him drop out!"
Chen Geng said with a smile: "He has been admitted to the Air Force Department and is a qualified student of our college, why should I let him drop out? Don't worry, I will be strict with him." ”
Peng Dehuai said: "You Chen Geng, you are always reasonable. ”
Through his studies, Peng Dehuai's nephew later successfully passed the graduation exam and was assigned to work at an air force airfield. However, Mr. Peng's selfless mind is still impressive decades later.
