On April 2, Shanghai COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Shanghai COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry) and the 7th O8 Research Institute of China Shipbuilding Group held a signing ceremony for a technical cooperation framework agreement and a new energy modification design contract for large container ships.
Guo Xiaodong, general manager of COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., and Zhu Jianzhang, deputy director of the 708th Research Institute, signed the agreement on behalf of both parties.
Li Xiaoxi, assistant general manager of Shanghai COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry Technology R&D Center, and Zhang Chao, director of the Civil Shipping Department of the 708th Research Institute, signed the design contract on behalf of both parties.
The design contract signed this time, including the detailed design of methanol fuel conversion for 13,800TEU and 20,000TEU container ships, represents the concept and trend of pursuing environmental protection and efficiency in the green marine transportation industry in the new era. The modified design upgrades the original fuel power system to a methanol dual-fuel power system, so that it can use both traditional fuel and cleaner and environmentally friendly methanol as the power source fuel. This not only greatly reduces the carbon emissions of the ship and reduces the pollution to the environment, but also improves the energy efficiency and economic benefits of the ship.
With the rigid requirements of overseas energy policies for "decarbonization", the conversion of existing ships to dual-fuel engines has become the focus of attention in the industry, and the conversion of ships to dual-fuel has huge market potential. It is understood that COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. officially signed a methanol dual-fuel transformation contract with COSCO Shipping Holdings earlier this year for two 13,800TEU and two 20,000TEU existing container ships, which is the world's first dual-fuel transformation project of MAN main engine and WARTSILA auxiliary engine at the same time. According to the contract, the first ship will be retrofitted by mid-2025.
COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (Shanghai) has signed the world's first Methanol dual-fuel conversion project with MAN Group and Wärtsilä Group respectively during the China International Maritime Exhibition in December last year.
Shanghai COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. said at the time that this was the world's first methanol dual-fuel conversion EPCIC contract for large container ships, including the MAN main engine and WARTSILA auxiliary engine were included in the transformation. Among them, Shanghai COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. is responsible for the design of methanol dual-fuel conversion, the main engine MAN B&W modification, dual-fuel generator transformation and methanol fuel system procurement, methanol fuel tank, pipeline, fuel supply system and other related structures for modification, and is responsible for the installation of related equipment, system commissioning and sea trial delivery.
