Last year marked the 20th anniversary of the Ducati Multistrada range. Ducati first unveiled the first prototype of the Multistrada in 2001 and officially unveiled it in 2003.

According to the official information, from 2003 to 2024, the flagship model in the Multistrada series has undergone four generations of development:

* The first generation was the Multistrada 1000 DS, which was first released in 2003, and the mid-generation improved Multistrada 1100;

* The second generation is the Multistrada 1200 series, first released in 2009 and officially launched in 2010;

* The third generation is the Multistrada 1200 with Testastretta DVT variable valve timing control, first shown in 2014 and officially launched in 2015, and the Multistrada 1260 series in the mid-range improvement;

* The fourth generation is the Multistrada V4 series, which was first released in 2019 and officially launched in 2020, with the Granturismo V4 engine.

Ducati's earliest models in the off-road/adventure car segment can be traced back to the Scrambler series of the last century, with the 250 Scrambler launched in 1962-1964 being off-road racers, while the second-generation 350 Scrambler from 1972-1975 (the first generation being the 350 Scrambler from 1968 to 1971) was an expedition-style model.

The first generation of the flagship Multistrada was born in 2003: the Multistrada 1000 DS, with the goal of offering a versatile, sporty model to the market, not just sports cars. Being able to cope with any terrain with maximum safety and stability is the direction of development of new cars.

The Multistrada 1000 DS is powered by an air-cooled, four-stroke, L-two-cylinder, DOHC Desmodromic two-valve-per-cylinder engine with a bore, stroke of 94 mm x 71.5 mm and a displacement of 992 cc, an electronic fuel injection system from Marelli, a dry clutch as standard and a six-speed gearbox with a maximum power output of 62 kW (approx. 84 hp). The body features a tubular steel frame, rear swingarm, and 17-inch diameter front and rear wheels. By 2006, an S version with Ohlins front and rear suspension was introduced.

By 2007, the first mid-generation version of the Multistrada 1100 series was introduced, with the same engine type, with an increased bore of 98 mm, a stroke of 71.5 mm, a displacement of 1079 cc and a maximum power output of 70 kW (about 95 hp). Like the initial variant, the new Multistrada 1100 is also available in the S version with Öhlins front and rear suspension.

The second-generation flagship Multistrada 1200 was first unveiled in 2009 and launched the following year, with the internal code name Cayenne. The car is powered by a newly developed, water-cooled, four-stroke, L-two-cylinder, DOHC Desmodromic four-valve engine with a bore and stroke of 106 mm x 67.9 mm, a displacement of 1,198.4 cc and a maximum power output of 110.3 kW (approx. 150 hp). The body features an all-new, finally Adventure-inspired body design, with a tubular steel frame, rear swingarm, and 17-inch diameter wheels at the front and rear, meaning that the second-generation Multistrada 1200 still leans towards the sporty performance of the regular paved road.

Not long after the second generation, the flagship Multistrada 1200 DVT of the third generation was first unveiled in 2014 and officially launched in 2015.

The third-generation Multistrada 1200 DVT is equipped with a newly developed water-cooled four-stroke L-two-cylinder, DOHC Testastretta DVT four-valve per cylinder engine, the DVT dual variable valves (intake and exhaust) timing control, which is an important highlight of the new machine, with the same bore and stroke of 106 mm x 67.9 mm as the second generation, a displacement of 1198.4 cc, and a maximum power output of 117.7 kW (about 160 hp). The body still has a tubular frame and rear swingarm, while the IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) has been added to the Multistrada for the first time, including electronic controls such as DTC traction control and cornering ABS.

In addition, more off-road versions are also available in this generation of the Multistrada 1200 DVT: the Standard, S and Pikes Peak versions still feature 17-inch wheels at the front and rear, while the Enduro and Enduro Pro versions launched between 2016 and 2018 get 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels, and the Enduro Pro Edition comes with off-road tyres as standard.
