Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa has previously said that Nintendo's Switch will remain the company's main business, at least until the current fiscal year (ending March 2024), and then the focus will be on the Switch 2 console.
Nintendo estimates global shipments for the current fiscal year at 15.5 million units, up 500,000 units from its previous estimate of 15 million units.
The Sony PlayStation 2 topped the list with 155 million units, the Nintendo DS console was in second place with 154 million units, and the Nintendo Switch is currently in third place, but is closing the gap with the runner-up.
In addition, Nintendo announced that after the Switch was released on March 3, 2017, the cumulative sales reached 33.34 million units, surpassing the Nintendo DS to become the best-selling game console in Japan.
