Stendhal's original novel "The Church of St. Francis on the Shore".

 September 30th

There was an Italian chronicler who recounted the details of a Roman princess's love affair with a Frenchman, and I translated it.

It happened in 1726, at the beginning of the last century, when nepotism was flourishing in Rome and the resulting vices were rife throughout the city. However, the Holy See was more prosperous than ever. Pope Benoah VIII (Ossini) was in charge, or rather his nephew, Prince of Combibaso, in his name, in charge of all affairs of the country, large and small. Foreigners flocked to Rome from all directions. The princes of Italy, the Spanish aristocracy, who were still enriched by the gold of the New World, also flocked to the country. Whoever is rich and powerful is above the law. Regardless of whether they are locals or foreigners, what they have to do when they come together is to chase the wind and talk about pomp and circumstance.

The Pope's two nieces, Countess Ossini and Princess Compobaso, share the authority of their uncle and the honor of the Holy See. Even at the top of society, their beauty makes them stand out. The Romans affectionately said that Madame Ossini was merry and dashing, and that Princess Compobaso was gentle and pious. However, if you are angry, this gentle woman will also be fury with thunder. Every day, the two concubines went to the palace to meet the Pope, met there, and often went to each other's mansions for a walk, on the surface it seemed that the relationship was harmonious, but in fact there was a competition everywhere: compared to appearance, more than reputation, more than wealth.

The Countess of Osini is a little less beautiful, but frivolous, lively, treacherous, and eye-catching. She has some lovers who can't take care of her, so she changes one a day. It was her happiness to see two hundred guests sitting in her salon and following her orders. She looked down on Princess Campopbaso. The princess had been with a Spanish duke for three years, and she was seen everywhere, but at last she gave an order that he should leave Rome within twenty-four hours or be put to death. Mrs. Ossini said: "After driving him away, there is no joy on the face of my beautiful sister-in-law. In recent months, she has been especially bored, or tormented by love. And her husband was not stupid, and in the presence of the Pope's uncle he described this annoyance as a high degree of piety, which I expected would lead her on a pilgrimage to Spain. ”

In fact, Princess Compopbaso did not miss the Spaniard at all. For at least two years, he had left her feeling extremely empty and bored. If she really wanted him, she would have sent someone to find him. She was born with this kind of character, and such people are not uncommon in Rome. Although she was just twenty-three years old, she was the age of a flower, but she often knelt before her uncle and prayed for "the blessing of the Pope" out of fanatical piety. We do not know the details of this "papal blessing", except that it can be forgiven for all but two or three most cruel sins, and even repentance. The merciful Pope Beloa VIII was moved to tears every time and said to him: "Arise, good nephew, you do not need my blessing, you are better than me in the sight of God." ”

Although the Pope was infallible, he was as wrong in this matter as everyone else in Rome. Princess Compopbaso fell into a crazy love affair, and her lover shared her passion. But she felt very unfortunate. For several months, she fell in love with the Knight Sénacer, nephew of the Duke of Saint-Terraum, the ambassador of King Louis XV to Rome, and met him every day.

The son of Prince Regent Philippe de Orleans with a mistress, Senasser was very popular in France, and although he had just turned twenty-two, he had been a colonel for several years. He developed a habit of pretentiousness, but he was not born that way. Cheerful, playful, reckless, brave, kind, these are the main characteristics of his distinctive personality. If we want to say good things about the French nation, then we can say that he is an extremely real sample of this people. Princess Compopbaso fell in love with him at first sight. "But," she told him, "you are French, and I don't trust you." I have a word in advance: when the Romans know that I have had a tryst with you a few times, I will think that you have leaked the secret, and I will not love you anymore. ”

Originally, Princess Campo Baso was playing with love, but who knew that she fell into the real love network. Senasser loved her too, but they were intimate for eight months, and the time made the love of the Italian woman more and more intense, but the love of the French man less and less. The knight was bored, but the satisfaction of vanity comforted him. He had already sent two or three portraits of the princess of Compopbaso to Paris. Moreover, he was pampered from an early age, and had developed a carefree disposition, and he did not care much about the things which were of interest to vanity, and the French in general were extremely concerned with such matters.

Senasser had no idea of his mistress's character, and sometimes his eccentric temper amused him. On St. Babina's Day, her real name, Feast Day, she felt deeply guilty and disturbed by her actions out of sincere and fervent devotion. At this point he had to comfort her and dispel these feelings. For the average Italian woman, Senasser can make them forget about religion, but for her, he can't. He overcame her by subjugation rather than persuasion, so quarrels always broke out.

For the first time in his life, this young man who was willing to do everything encountered obstacles. However, this made him happy, and he developed a habit of tenderness and consideration around the princess, and sometimes he also considered it his duty to love her. Plus, there's a reason why it's not romantic. He had only one confidant, and that was the ambassador, the Duke of Saint-Terra, who sometimes served the ambassador through Princess Campobaso, because the princess knew everything. In the eyes of the ambassador, he was a figure of great importance, and he was particularly proud of it.

Princess Campopbaso is very different from Senasser, and she does not care about the superiority of her lover in society. The only thing she cares about is that he can't love her. "I gave him my life's happiness. "He, a pagan, a Frenchman, could not have made the same sacrifice for me," she pondered. But the joy of Senasser, so lovely, so pervasive, and so sincere, and heartfelt, amazed and fascinated the heart of Princess Compopbaso. As soon as she saw him, she prepared in her heart what she said to him, and her dark thoughts vanished. The feeling was so new to the haughty woman that it haunted Senasser long after she was gone. She finally found herself unable to think and live without him.

In Rome, the Spaniards were hugely popular for two centuries. Now the French are favored again. There is a kind of character, where it goes, there is happiness, there is happiness. The Romans began to understand this character. But this character existed only in France, and after the revolution of 1789, it was gone. This is because a lasting happiness needs to be maintained without merit, but in post-revolutionary France, no one can have a safe job, and even geniuses (if there are geniuses) have to worry about jobs.

A war broke out between Senasser's class and the rest of the nation. Rome was also very different from the Rome of today. In 1726, when it was not expected that sixty-six years later would happen, that the Jacobin Barseville wanted to civilize the capital of Christendom, some parish priests bribed the populace and killed him.

At Senasser's side, for the first time, Princess Compobaso lost her mind, intoxicated or deeply unhappy by something that her sanity did not approve of. In the eyes of the sincere and serious princess, religion and reason are two different things. Once Senassar had overcome her religious beliefs, love poured out of her until it became an unbridled passion.

Princess Compopbaso had long seen Lord Ferratella as a useful person, and she had intended to acquire his property. Ferratella told her that not only did Senasser go to Madame d'Osini's house more often than usual, but that he had the Countess send away a famous lady who had been her official lover for several weeks. When the princess heard the news, she must have felt so uncomfortable!

Our story begins the night she heard the sad news.

Princess Campo Baso sat in a large golden leather chair and did not move. On the small black marble table next to it, there were two silver table lamps. It is the masterpiece of the famous Bonviluto Celini. They illuminate the hall on the ground floor of the palace than to show the darkness of the hall. There are some oil paintings hanging on the four walls of the hall, and the pictures are a little black because of their age. For this century, the time for those great painters to show their talents is far away.

Young Senasser sat elegantly in a small gold-trimmed ebony chair. He was face to face with the princess, so close that he was almost at her feet. The princess stared at him, and from the moment he entered the hall, she not only did not meet him, but threw herself into his arms, and did not say a word to him.

By 1626, Paris had become the capital of fashion trends. Senasser regularly brought objects from Paris by mail truck that brought out the elegance of the most handsome men in France. He learned to deal with women in the beauties of the regent's court, and was instructed by the famous teacher Cagnac. Kaniac was his uncle, one of the Regent's debauched friends. A person of his status was born with a kind of self-confidence, but today in front of the princess, he quickly showed an embarrassed expression. The princess's golden hair was a little unkempt, and her two big dark blue eyes stared at him deadly, and that look was unpredictable. Did she harbor a bitter hatred for him and want to take revenge mercilessly, or was it only because of passionate love that she showed such a deep and serious expression?

"So, you don't love me anymore?" She finally squeezed the words out of her throat.

This declaration of war was followed by a long silence.

It was painful for the princess to give up the charming grace of Senasser. If she hadn't put on this indifferent scene, he would have said a thousand sweet words to him. But she was too arrogant to explain why she had such an attitude. A pretty woman is jealous of others out of self-esteem; The amorous woman is out of habit. A woman who is passionately and sincerely in love knows her rights. The way she looked at Senasser was peculiar to Roman love, and Xenasser found it very interesting. He could see deep affection and hesitation in her gaze, and he could even say that he saw a naked soul. This look was not visible in the eyes of Mrs. Osini.

This time, however, the silence was a little too long. This French young man, who is not good at penetrating into the inner emotional world of Italians, pretends to be casual and understands the truth, and no longer feels embarrassed. Actually, he was still a little annoyed at this time. As he had just passed through the basement and the underground passage, from the neighboring house, to the parlor on the ground floor, several cobwebs had been glued to the fine garments he had brought from Paris the previous day. He looked very uncomfortable, and he hated this little bug.

Senasser thought that Princess Compobaso's eyes showed that she had regained her inner peace, and he intended to avoid quarrelling, and did not refute her accusations. However, the inconvenience he felt made him change his mind. He pondered, "Isn't this a good time to let her know the truth? I'm certainly not in love fodder. Look at this woman, and her distinctive eyes, I have never seen such a beautiful stunner. But she had some stinking rules that allowed me to come up through that abominable tunnel. She was the Pope's nephew, and the king had sent me to do something for him by the Pope's side. Besides, the women in this country are all brown-haired, but she has blonde hair, which is a sign of an unusual difference. Every day, I hear people raving about her beauty, and their praise is all genuine, and not flattering to her face. As for the rights of men with their mistresses, I have no worries. With a single word, I could make her abandon the palace, the gold-encrusted furniture, her uncle the Pope, and go with me to France, to the remote provinces, and to live a cold and indifferent life in my realm...... Oh my God! That kind of ending only made me make up my mind never to ask her for that. Mrs. Ossini was nowhere near as beautiful as she was, but she loved me. However, compared to the singer Bhutofak who I sent her away yesterday, she has little more affection for me. However, she is sensible and can live, and I can go to her house in a carriage. I'm sure she'll never lose her temper with me, and she'll love me more than that. ”

In this long silence, the princess's gaze never took off the beautiful forehead of the young Frenchman.

"I'll never see him again. She pondered. Suddenly, she threw herself into his arms and imprinted kisses on his forehead and eyes like a madman. But those eyes were red with happiness when they saw her. The knight underestimated this action, although he had not forgotten the plan to break up, and although the mistress was emotional, he could not forget her jealousy. After a while, Senassar stared at her in amazement, and saw large tears rolling down her cheeks. "What!" She said softly. "I've become so worthless that I want to tell him about his change of heart. I used to swear that I would never pay attention to these things, but now I will blame him! It's not cheap, and what's worse is that I'm touched by this charming face again......! It's time for this to end!"

She wiped away her tears and seemed to regain her composure.

"Knight, it's time to finish. "You often go to the Countess's ......house," she said quite calmly, "and her face turned extremely pale," and "if you love her, go to her house every day, but don't come here again......," she seemed to stop talking, waiting for the knight to say a word, but the knight did not speak. So she continued, her body twitching slightly, and her teeth clenched: "This will be the death sentence for you and me." ”

This threatening remark made the knight's hesitant heart make up his mind. He laughed in his astonishment at the fact that the princess had been silent at first, and then kissed him unexpectedly.

The princess's face turned white to red, and finally swelled red. She was so angry that she was about to suffocate. "She's going to have a stroke," the knight thought. He stepped forward to undress her. She pushed him away with determination and strength he had never seen before. Later, Senassar recalled that when he tried to take her into his arms, he heard her talking to herself, so he stepped back a little. In fact, this caution was superfluous, because she no longer seemed to pay attention to him. She muttered to herself, as if she were confessing to a priest: "He insulted me, he rushed me." He is a man of great importance, and the French are frivolous, and he will certainly tell Madame Osini of my degrading behavior...... I can't grasp myself anymore. I can't say that I can remain indifferent in the face of this charming face......" followed by another silence. The knight was very bored. The princess finally stood up, and repeated in a poignant voice: "It's over! It's over!"

Senasser only wanted to reconcile with the princess, and forgot to give a serious explanation in a moment's whim. He told only two or three jokes, referring to an incident that was widely discussed in Rome......

"Knight," interrupted the princess, "please leave me alone for a while, I'm not feeling well......"

Senasser immediately complied. He pondered, "This woman is tired of it, and I hope this feeling is not contagious." The princess watched him walk to the end of the hall...... "I have decided my fate so recklessly!" She smiled wryly and said, "Fortunately, his inappropriate joke sobered me up." How stupid is this man! How could I love someone who doesn't understand me so much? It's about me and his life, and he wants to distract me with a joke...... I also know that I am in a bad mood, and that he is the one who has misfortuned me!" She jerked up from her chair, "How beautiful are his eyes when he talks to me...... Truth be told, the poor knight's intentions weren't bad. He understood my personality flaws, and he wanted me to forget about the troubles that plagued my heart, so he didn't ask me why I was bothered. After all, I didn't know what happiness was until I loved him. ”

She began to think sweetly about her lover's loveliness again. Gradually, her thoughts were drawn to the charm of the Countess of Osini. So she was pessimistic and disappointed in everything, and her heart was tormented by the cruelest jealousy. In fact, as early as two months ago, she had a premonition of this misfortune. With the knight, she felt that life was passable, and once she left his embrace, she spoke to him almost always with a hint of vitriol.

The night was hard, she was exhausted, and the pain calmed her down a little.

She wanted to talk to Senasser. "Because he saw me angry at last, but he didn't know why I was angry. Maybe he didn't love the Countess. Perhaps, he went to her house because an outsider should be familiar with the social world of the country in which he lived, especially the family of the monarch. If I had someone introduce him to me, he would have sat for hours, as he had been in the house of Ossini if he had come to my house openly. ”

"No, I can't. She roared, "I am willing to fall for myself when I talk to him, he will despise me, and all I can get is this." Madame Stinky was frivolous, and I often looked down on her because I was a fool. In fact, her personality is more likable, especially in the eyes of a Frenchman. As for me, I was born to live a boring life with a Spaniard. Always keep a straight face, as if the changes in life are not serious enough, is there anything more ridiculous?...... What shall I become of the knight who leaves me, who no longer gives me vitality, who no longer kindles a fire in my heart?"

She ordered the door to be shut. But Mistress Ferratella could not shut himself out, for he had come to tell her what they had done in the House of Osini until one o'clock in the morning. The High Priest had done much so far for the Princess's love, but he was sure that if Xernasser had no relationship with the Countess, they would be as good as glue from to-night onwards.

Mistress Ferratella thought, "For me, a pious princess is more useful than a woman who is good at socializing." There will always be a man who is more favored by her than I am, and that is her lover. If she had found a Roman lover, their father would have elevated him to cardinal. If I make her firm in her faith, then she will think of the Divine Master first, and with enthusiasm...... With her, what else can I not expect from her uncle?" This ambitious senior teacher has a sweet dream. He seemed to see the princess kneeling before the Pope and begging for the office of cardinal for him. And the Pope is full of gratitude for what he will do...... Once the princess had become convinced, he would present incontrovertible evidence of her affair with the young Frenchman to the Pope. The Holy One is pious, sincere, and haters the French, and will always be grateful to the one who has brought an end to a private affair that has made him unhappy. Ferratella was born into a wealthy Ferrar family, and was in his early fifties...... Soon he will be promoted to cardinal. He rejoiced at the prospect and did a great job. also dared to suddenly change roles in front of the princess. Had it not been for the fact that for the past two months, Xenasser had become apparently estranged from the Princess, and it would have been dangerous to attack him, for the High Priests did not know Xernasser and thought that he was also a careerist.

To reproduce in full the dialogue between the madly loved and jealous princess and the ambitious high clergy must have felt too long for the reader. This can only be briefly introduced here. Ferratella first told the sad truth, and with this seizing beginning, it was not difficult to awaken the pious religious feelings that had been sleeping in the hearts of the young women of Rome. Because she was, after all, a true believer, the high priest said to her: "Misfortune and humiliation should put an end to the blasphemous feelings." When he walked out of the palace of Compibaso, he was bright. He asked the concubine, who had just become firm in her faith, not to receive Senaser today. The princess agreed without difficulty. One is that she thinks she should be religious, and the other is that she is in fact afraid of being despised by the knight for being weak before him.

She held on to this determination until four o'clock, when the knight might come and meet her. He walked down a street behind the garden of the palace, saw the signal that he could not be seen, and went happily to the palace of the Countess of Orsini.

Slowly, Princess Campopbaso felt as if she had gone mad, and strange thoughts and intentions came to her head one after another. Suddenly, as if insane, she ran down the staircase, jumped into the carriage, and shouted to the coachman, "Go to the Orsini house." ”

Utter misfortune led her to visit the Countess, and she found her among fifty guests. The brilliant and ambitious men of Rome, since they could not go to the palace of the Compopasso, all went to the palace of Orsini. The presence of the princess became a major event, and the guests avoided it as a sign of respect. The princess also seemed to disdain to pay attention to this minutiae, and she looked intently at her rivals, admiring her. Every loveliness of the countess was a stab in her heart. After a little noise, the countess saw that she no longer squeaked, and had other thoughts, so she began her amuseful and natural rambling again.

"When I was emotional, I was either mad or annoyed, and she was so happy, of course, it attracted the knight even more. Princess Campo Baso thought.

She admired and hated the Countess at the same time, and with an inexplicable impulse she threw herself on her neck and threw her hands on her. Now, she saw only the Countess's quili. It was equally fascinating to look at it from afar and up close, and she compared her hair, eyes, and skin with the countess's, and upon such an examination she felt disgusted with herself. She felt that everything in the countess was cuter than herself, a cut above her.

Princess Compopbaso was sullen and motionless, like a basalt statue in the midst of this group of people who were pointing fingers and laughing. There were people coming and going in the living room, and the laughter made her upset and unhappy. How complicated was her mood when she suddenly heard the voice of Mr. Senather's arrival! At the beginning of their relationship, they agreed that it would be more appropriate for them not to speak much in the public. This is because a foreign diplomat can meet the Pope's niece and daughter-in-law two or three times a month at most.

Senasser greeted Princess Compobaso respectfully and solemnly, as usual, and then returned to Countess Osini, and spoke pleasantly and cordially. This tone is only used when talking to a smart woman who meets you every day and treats you very well. Princess Compobaso was stunned, and she thought, "The Countess is telling me what to do." It's supposed to be the same with people, but I can't do it!"

Princess Compopbaso fell into the greatest misfortune of her life. She was almost determined to kill herself by poisoning. The night was long, and the extreme pain she felt far exceeded the pleasure that Senasse's love gave her. It seems that these Roman women were suffering and had potential that other women did not have.

The next day, Senasser passed by the back of the garden, and saw another signal that he could not see each other, so he went away happily again. But after thinking about it, he still felt uncomfortable, "She just sent me away? No, let her receive me with tears in her eyes." His vanity said. It was only when he lost this beautiful woman, the Pope's niece, forever, that he felt a glimmer of love. He got out of the carriage and went into the filthy underground passageway, which made him unappetizing, and pushed open the door on the ground floor, and entered the drawing-room where the princess usually received him.

"Why, how dare you come here?" The princess was taken aback.

"Her surprise was faked, she wouldn't have come here if she hadn't waited for me. "The young Frenchman thought.

The knight walked over and took her hand. She shuddered, and her eyes filled with tears. She seemed so beautiful to the knight that he felt pity for a moment. As for her, how many vows she has made to her religious beliefs in the past two days, they are all thrown into Lethe River at this moment. She threw herself into his arms, and her heart felt extremely happy!" It is this happiness that the Count of Ossini will enjoy...... "As usual, Senasser did not know much about the heart of a Roman woman. He thought that the princess wanted to get along with him and break up with him politely. "As an attaché at the Royal Embassy, I have been sent to work with the Pope, and it is not appropriate for me to make a feud with the Pope's nephew. He was very happy to accept this outcome. Therefore he spoke wisely: they would be very comfortable with each other; Why didn't they rejoice in it? Is there anything he can blame? A gentle and good friendship will replace love. He earnestly begged the princess to give him the privilege of coming here often, and they would always be happy with them......

The princess didn't understand what he meant at first. Later, she finally understood, and her heart suddenly overflowed with disgust. She stood there, her eyes dazed, not moving. When the knight said "always be happy". She interrupted him coldly:

"That is to say, after all, you think I am beautiful and can serve you!"

"But, dear dear friend, let's not hurt our pride, shall we?" Senasser replied, surprised by her reaction. "Can you put aside those complaints? No one has ever doubted our rapport. I am a gentleman of my word, and I assure you once again that no one knows the happiness I have enjoyed. ”

"Doesn't Mrs. Ossini know either?" She asked coldly, giving the knight another illusion. He stupidly said:

"Before I became your slave, when did I mention the woman I loved to you?"

"I respect your promise, but I don't want to take that risk. The princess said in a resolute tone, which really surprised the knight. "Farewell, knight......" she called out to him as he hesitated to walk out, "come and kiss me." ”

Apparently she relented, and then, she said firmly, "Farewell, ride on the ......."

When he went out on the eleventh, the princess sent someone to find Ferratera. "You want to avenge me. She said to him. The senior priest was overjoyed, "Now she can't get out, she's in my hands forever." ”

Two days later, at midnight, it was extremely hot. Senasser went for a ride along the boulevards, where he found the people of Roman society. When he was about to board the carriage and go home, his servant was so drunk that he could not answer anything when asked; The coachman is missing. When the servant came to his senses, he learned that the coachman had just quarreled with an enemy.

"Drink! My coachman still has a rival!" Senasser said with a smile.

On the way home, the knight walked to a place only two or three blocks from the main road when he noticed someone following, about four or five people. He stops, they stop, and when he goes, they go. "I could take a detour and get down the road from another street. The knight thought, but then changed his mind again, "Hmph! I've brought a weapon, and I'm afraid of these guys!" He drew his dagger.

He thought like this as he walked through two or three remote streets. The street grew darker and darker, and he heard the people behind him quicken their steps. It was then that he discovered a chapel of St. Francis' in front of him. There was a strange light from the windowpanes of the church, and he ran over and knocked on the door with the handle of his dagger. One of the monks opened the door, let Senasser rush in, and then closed the door and plugged in the iron latch. At that moment, the stalker kicked the door hard. The monk scolded, "These blasphemous fellows!" Senasser handed him a gold coin and said, "These fellows have a grudge against me. ”

The chapel is brightly lit, with at least a thousand large candles lit.

"What's the matter, the ceremony is still going on at this time!" The knight asked.

"Yes, sir. It is chartered by the Acting Cardinal. ”

A solemn mourning hall has been erected in a narrow open space in the chapel of St. Francis on the shore. Someone was doing a prayer ceremony.

"Who died? It's a prince, right?" Senasser asked.

"Perhaps," replied the monk, "because the loss of family is sparing no money, and only princes and nobles can afford such a funeral." But then again, it's just a waste of money and candles. The patriarch tells us that the deceased died without a deathbed confession. ”

When Senasser looked closer, he saw a French-style coat of arms on the altar. He was even more curious, so he took a step closer and recognized it as his family's family emblem! and there was a tablet with the words in Latin:

The noble knight Jean-Nobel Sénasse died in Rome

"I was the first person alive to attend my funeral. "I think only Charles V would have had that kind of fun," he thought to himself...... However, I should not stay in this church for long. ”

He took another gold coin and gave it to the monk and begged, "Father, please open the back door and let me out." ”

  "Willing to serve. ”

With a pistol in each hand, Senasser ran as fast as he could as fast as he could out of the church door. He hadn't run a few steps before he heard someone chasing after him. When he ran to the door of the mansion, he found that the door was closed, and a man was standing in front of it. "It's time to fight hard. He thought. He was about to shoot at the man when he suddenly realized that he was his manservant. "Open the door. He shouted.

The door opened, and they quickly ran in and closed it again.

"Oh, my lord, I'm looking for you everywhere. Here is some unfortunate news: the poor coachman ordered someone to kill him with a knife. Those guys are killing him and scolding you. My lord, they want your life......"

As the servant spoke, eight guns were fired at the same time from the window on the side of the garden. Senasser threw himself to the ground, and beside him lay his valet, each of whom had been shot by more than two dozen guns.

Two years later, Princess Compopbaso was regarded as a model of Roman piety, and Lord Ferratella had already become a cardinal.

I ask the reader to forgive the author for his mistakes.
