Trip to 10 European Countries (14): A Travelogue of Vaduz, the Capital of the Principality of Liechtenstein

author:Zhao Min V

We took a coach from Lucerne, Switzerland to Vaduz, the capital of the Principality of Liechtenstein, a 220-kilometer journey.

Located between Switzerland and Austria, Liechtenstein covers an area of 160 square kilometres and has a total population of 37,129 (December 2013). It is reported that skateboarding is forbidden on the steep slope in Liechtenstein, because the land area is too small, and the steep slope is not carefully controlled to Switzerland~~

In German, "Liechtenstein" means "shining stone". Only about one-third of the country on the western side of the country is in flat river valleys, and the rest is mostly mountainous. Liechtenstein, whose official language is German, is a small country known for its beautiful Alpine scenery and high standard of living.

In addition to the free flow of goods between Liechtenstein and Switzerland, the Swiss franc has become the official currency of Liechtenstein. Much of Liechtenstein's income comes from banking, tourism, the sale of postage stamps, and international companies that have their headquarters here. Liechtenstein has a parliamentary constitutional monarchy, with the Grand Duke (duke) having supreme power.

Liechtensteinians are generally well-dressed and neat, and they like international fashion, and their clothes are colorful, and traditional national costumes are worn only on specific occasions. Those who are unkempt and overly dressed are not welcome here~~

Located on the east bank of the Rhine River and in a basin surrounded by mountains, the capital Vaduz is an old village that became the capital in 1866 and has many buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. The most famous building in Vaduz is the well-preserved Vaduz Castle in the Three Sisters Mountain, which is the symbol of the city. Originally built in the 9th century in the Gothic style, Vaduz Castle is a royal residence and a world-famous private collection of artefacts and works of art collected by successive Grand Dukes, a collection said to rival only the Queen of England. Famous for its stamps, Vaduz is loved by stamp collectors around the world, with annual sales revenue accounting for 12% of GDP. The city's most striking building is the Stamp Museum, which was built in 1930 and has one of the largest number of stamps on display in the world. The exhibition includes stamps issued by the state since 1912 and a variety of stamps collected after joining the Universal Postal Union in 1921.

Most of the buildings in Vaduz are bungalows, with flowers and grass planted in front of the house and behind the house, and the trees are shady, and the pastoral color is strong, and there is no feeling of a national capital. Even the government office building is just a small three-story building, which can be regarded as a high-rise building in Vaduz. Residents of towns and villages interact closely and live in harmony.

When we arrived in Vaduz, it was a garden tour that seemed to be gathered from all over Liechtenstein......
