On January 24, 2024, Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, held talks with Nauru Foreign Minister Anglom in Beijing and signed the Joint Communiqué between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Nauru on the Restoration of Diplomatic Relations. Wang Yi said that we are about to open a new chapter in China-Nau relations, which is a historic moment that will surely go down in history. Proceeding from the country's long-term development and the fundamental interests of the people, the Nauru Government has made the political decision to recognize the one-China principle, "sever diplomatic relations" with the Taiwan region, and resume diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China. The Nauruan Parliament unanimously adopted a resolution in support of this decision, which fully represents the will of the Nauruan people. China welcomes and appreciates this. Wang Yi stressed that the one-China principle is the fundamental premise and political foundation for the development of relations between China and other countries in the world. The return of China-Nau relations to the right track is not easy to come by, and the two sides should cherish it, safeguard the most fundamental political foundation of China-Nau relations, ensure a good start, and unswervingly continue to move forward in the right direction. The economies of China and Nau are highly complementary, with extensive common interests and broad prospects for cooperation. China is ready to take the resumption of diplomatic relations as an opportunity to strengthen exchanges at all levels, share experience in governance, align development strategies, and work together to build good brothers, good friends and good partners with mutual trust in politics, mutual benefit and win-win results in the economy, and mutual support in international affairs, so as to build a closer community with a shared future between China and Pacific Island Countries.
Anglim said that the Nauru government has announced that it will completely "sever diplomatic relations" with the Taiwan region and seek to resume diplomatic relations with China, which has been unanimously approved by the Nauru parliament, and all members have stood up to express their support. This fully proves that this decision is correct, popular and in Nauru's fundamental interests. I would like to solemnly promise that the Government of Nauru recognizes that there is only one China in the world, that the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate Government representing the whole of China, and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory.
