Wang Yi: China-Nau relations have turned a new page

On January 24, 2024, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, jointly met with reporters after signing a communiqué on the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Nauru with Foreign Minister Angming of Nauru in Beijing. Wang Yi said that nine days ago, the Nauru Cabinet made a political decision to "sever diplomatic relations" with the Taiwan region and resume diplomatic relations with China, which was unanimously supported by the Nauru Parliament. This is an independent political decision made by the Nauruan Government and fully reflects the common will of the Nauru people. Wang Yi said that today, China-Nau relations have turned a new page. Foreign Minister Angermin and I have just signed the Joint Communiqué between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Nauru on the Resumption of Diplomatic Relations. The two sides decided to resume diplomatic relations between the two countries at the ambassadorial level with immediate effect. Nauru became the 183rd country with diplomatic relations with China. Wang Yi pointed out that although China and Nauru are geographically separated by oceans, the friendship between the two peoples goes back to ancient times. As both developing countries, both sides are faced with the common task of developing the economy, improving people's livelihood and realizing modernization. As members of the Global South, the two sides share a common will to defend their sovereignty and independence, safeguard the common interests of developing countries, and promote an equal and orderly multipolar world and inclusive economic globalization. These are the fundamental logics that bring the two countries closer to each other, and they will inevitably bring about broad prospects for cooperation.

Wang Yi said that China has always maintained that all countries, big or small, strong or weak, rich or poor, are equal, and are important members of the international community. We will uphold the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and treat Nauru as equals, and support Nauru in pursuing a development path that suits its national conditions and is independently chosen by its people. We look forward to working with Nauru to deepen political mutual trust, advance mutually beneficial cooperation, enhance people-to-people friendship, and push China-Nauru relations to a new level. We are ready to share the development opportunities brought about by China's modernization with Nauru and jointly promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. Wang Yi stressed that the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Nauche has once again demonstrated to the world that upholding the one-China principle is an irresistible historical trend. The vast majority of countries in the world have accepted the one-China principle and recognized the Government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate government representing the whole of China. No matter how the situation on the island of Taiwan changes, the historical and legal facts that Taiwan is part of China's territory will not change, the characteristics of Chinese civilization that the territory is inseparable and the nation cannot be separated will not change, the international consensus in support of China's safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity will not change, and the historical process of Taiwan's inevitable return and China's reunification will not change. Wang Yi pointed out that there are still a very small number of countries that maintain so-called "diplomatic relations" with the Taiwan region for various reasons. This practice not only runs counter to the interests of its own country and people, but also violates UNGA Resolution 2758, and also constitutes an infringement on China's national sovereignty, which must be corrected sooner or later. China urges these countries to recognize the trend of the times, seize the historical opportunity, fulfill their obligations under international law, stand with the international community, and keep pace with history. Friendship takes no particular order, and China is willing to open a new chapter in its relations with these countries on the basis of the one-China principle.
