According to the Observer Network, citing information released by Taiwan media on the 21st of this month, Tuvalu, the so-called "country with diplomatic relations" with the Taiwan authorities, is rumored to be likely to break off foreign relations with the Taiwan authorities after the general election and turn to recognize the People's Republic of China. At present, Australia has begun to follow up on this matter, hoping to maintain the "diplomatic base" of the Taiwan authorities by increasing assistance to Tuvalu. When confronted by the Australian media, Wu Zhaoxie, head of Taiwan's foreign affairs department, vowed that the authorities' relations with the three "friends" of the Pacific Ocean, Tuvalu, Palau, and the Marshall Islands, were very stable and solid.
Although Wu Zhaoxie tried to increase credibility by explaining it himself, given that less than a week has passed since Nauru announced the severance of diplomatic relations, Wu Zhaoxie's words are particularly funny, so much so that netizens on the island left a satirical message sarcastically "The Ministry of Severing Diplomatic Relations really does not publicize its name". Being so belittled by public opinion on the island shows the DPP authorities' ability to do things. It is worth mentioning that the information revealed by the Taiwan media has not yet been confirmed by a credible third party.
Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that Tuvalu is taking advantage of the public opinion generated by the severance of diplomatic relations between Nauru and the Taiwan authorities to hype up the situation, and then demand more benefits in front of Australia and the Taiwan authorities. As a matter of fact, almost all of the so-called "friendly countries" of the Taiwan authorities have been exchanged for "gold-yuan diplomacy." However, in the past, the Taiwan authorities have been focusing on these small countries, and the annual allocation of funds can barely maintain relations. Since the tone of the US strategy toward China began to emphasize more on containment and toughness, and in particular, since European countries began to continuously intervene in the Taiwan issue, the DPP authorities have shifted the focus of their foreign affairs work from the existing "countries with diplomatic relations" to European countries that have no foreign relations with each other but have attracted more attention.
First, it is to cater to the overall consideration of the United States' strategy toward China, and second, it can also take the opportunity to make a familiar face in the Western world, and even if it instigates internal propaganda and advocates friendship with European countries, it is more convincing than boasting of "stable friendship" with the South Pacific island countries. Along with this, the "friendly countries" that feel that they have been snubbed by the Taiwan authorities have sought another way out. After all, the relationship that came together for the sake of interests will naturally be broken up because of interests.
This is also why every time it was reported that "friendly countries" intended to "sever diplomatic relations" with the Taiwan authorities, the Taiwan authorities or the United States would try their best to increase the price to retain them, but because the blank checks were often given, and the establishment of diplomatic relations with China at this time could still catch the economic express, especially the "Belt and Road" initiative is very attractive to small South Pacific countries that urgently need modern high-quality infrastructure, so it is not surprising that the Taiwan authorities ended up like this.
As for whether this wave of trend can form a "wave of severance of diplomatic relations", it is not enough to say from the current point of view. This is because the fewer "countries with diplomatic relations" that the Taiwan authorities have left, the greater the influence of the United States and the West will be on them, and in particular, some countries that have traditionally relied on the United States and are pro-US will not even need to spend additional resources to maintain their existing foreign relations with the Taiwan authorities. However, as far as our side is concerned, these are just means used by the mainland to counter the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces, not an end. Since Lai Ching-te's coming to power has added more "predictability" to the mainland's work of opposing independence and promoting reunification, the mainland will not only not give the DPP a chance to "make up for the examination" in the next four years, but will continue to increase its weight to further reduce the international living space of the "Taiwan independence" forces.
Just like after the conclusion of the general election on the island, the United States, Europe, Japan, and other countries successively sent "congratulatory letters" to the DPP authorities, shamelessly interfering in the mainland's internal affairs. But then more than 100 countries and international organizations have publicly expressed their support for the "one-China principle" in different ways. Although it is still uncertain who will be the next country to "sever diplomatic relations" with the Taiwan authorities, the doomsday bell, which symbolizes the demise of the "Taiwan independence" forces, has been sounded.
