The U.S. has recently escalated sanctions against Iran and China, announcing sanctions and export controls on a number of individuals and entities in response to cooperation between the two countries in the fields of drones, missiles and electronic components. Hossein Hatefi Ardakani, the head of an Iranian electronics company, and Gary Lam, a Chinese citizen surnamed Lin living in Chinese mainland and Hong Kong, violated U.S. sanctions in 2014 and 2015 by buying and exporting electronic components to Iran, according to an indictment released Tuesday by the Justice Department.
According to the U.S. Treasury Department, Lin has been added to the U.S. sanctions list of 11 individuals, eight entities and one vessel released on October 18 for their alleged involvement in the development of Iran's missile and drone programs.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security, and the Defense Criminal Investigation Agency are investigating the case, according to the Justice Department.
"The United States is determined to use all available means to expose and destroy the growing development and proliferation of Iranian drones, which is destabilizing the Middle East region and could prolong Russia's unjustified war against Ukraine," the U.S. State Department said in a statement, referring to the kamikaze drones provided by Tehran to Moscow. The United States has accused Iran of using drones to provide support to its hostile forces in the Middle East, including Allah, Hamas and the Houthis. The United States also claims that Iranian drones pose a threat to the United States and its allies, especially in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice indictment, Iran's drone program relies heavily on parts imported from China, one of Iran's largest trading partners. China is also one of the signatories to the Iran nuclear deal and opposes the U.S. withdrawal from the deal and the reinstatement of sanctions on Iran.
Iran, for its part, has denied the U.S. allegations, saying that its drone program is for self-defense peace and purposes, not for attack or proliferation. Iran also said that the US sanctions against Iran are illegal and unilateral, violate UN Security Council resolutions, and will not affect Iran's legitimate rights and interests.
Iran claims that its drone technology is developed in-house and does not rely on foreign help. Iran also asserts that its drones have an advantage in the Middle East and are capable of defending against threats from the United States and Israel.
