On December 12, a fisheries enforcement vessel carrying 23 spotted seals arrived at a release point off the coast of Lushun New Port. Slipping down the release ladder, the spotted seals slide into the sea and swim into the depths of the sea.

It is understood that each spotted seal released has a special identification code installed to reduce the risk of being caught and traded again. Four of the seals have also been equipped with satellite tracking and positioning systems to provide data support for seal conservation and scientific research.

Huping Island, not far from the release site, is one of the four main landing sites for harbor seals on the mainland, with nearly 200 harbor seals returning to roost here in November and leaving in May of the following year.

According to experts, it is the time for the harbor seals to return to the mainland, and the release of spotted seals at this time is conducive to improving the success rate of their rewilding and better to return the harbor seals to the population.

The protection is relatively strong. Every spring, its ashore or lone baby seals can be found and rescued. From our surveys over the years, the overall harbor seal population is a steady, gradual recovery trend.

International Seal Day is celebrated on March 1 every year. Spotted seals are also the only pinnipeds that can breed in mainland waters, and belong to the national first-class protected animals.
