Tesla has another large-scale recall

On January 5, the State Administration for Market Regulation announced that Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. and Tesla Motors (Beijing) Co., Ltd. filed a recall plan with the State Administration for Market Regulation. According to the recall plan, Tesla expects to recall two batches of electric vehicles with safety hazards, totaling 1.618 million units.

However, the recall announcement also made it clear that the recall will be implemented in phases, and users can complete the software upgrade without visiting the store. For vehicles that cannot be recalled through OTA technology, Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. and Tesla Motors (Beijing) Co., Ltd. will contact relevant users through Tesla service centers to upgrade the software for the vehicles free of charge.

Regarding Tesla's recall, Musk previously responded that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration used the word "recall" to describe Tesla's updated data as "ridiculously wrong".

Tesla has another large-scale recall

In fact, Tesla has gone through multiple recalls, most of which have been solved through OTA.

Since Tesla launched the Model S in 2012, it has had OTA capabilities for the whole vehicle. Not only can the in-vehicle entertainment system and applications be upgraded through OTA, but also the ECU can be updated with software, such as battery management system, electric drive control unit, vehicle control unit, etc.

In this large-scale recall, Tesla is modifying the control logic of automatic assisted driving and some hardware through OTA.

According to the recall plan, first, from now on, Tesla will recall some imported Model S and Model X electric vehicles with a production date between October 26, 2022 and November 16, 2023, a total of 7,538 units.

It is understood that due to the door unlocking logic control problem of the vehicles within the scope of this recall, in the event of a collision, the non-collision side door latch may be detached from the latch, so that the door is in a non-locked state, which is a potential safety hazard.

Tesla Motors (Beijing) Co., Ltd. will use the vehicle remote upgrade (OTA) technology to upgrade the software for the vehicles within the scope of the recall free of charge to prevent the door latch from disengaging from the latch during the vehicle collision. Users don't need to come to the store to complete the software upgrade. For vehicles that cannot be recalled through OTA technology, Tesla Motors (Beijing) Co., Ltd. will contact relevant users through Tesla service centers to upgrade the software for free to eliminate potential safety hazards.

In terms of emergency measures, users are advised to drive the vehicle cautiously before the implementation of the vehicle recall, and upgrade the vehicle software as soon as possible after receiving the recall software update notice.

Second, from now on, Tesla will recall some imported Model S, Model X, Model 3 and domestically produced Model 3 and Model Y electric vehicles between August 26, 2014 and December 20, 2023, a total of 1610105 units.

It is understood that in the vehicles within the scope of this recall, when the automatic steering function is turned on, the driver may misuse the level 2 combined driving assistance function, increasing the risk of vehicle collision and potential safety hazards.

Tesla Motors (Beijing) Co., Ltd. and Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. will use the vehicle remote upgrade (OTA) technology to push newly developed functions to vehicles within the scope of the recall, including the addition of additional Autosteer control and related prompts, to further encourage drivers to perform driving duties and comply with driving regulations when the function is enabled, so as to reduce the risk of collision caused by misuse of the assisted steering function.

The recall will be implemented in phases, allowing users to complete the software upgrade without having to visit the store. For vehicles that cannot be recalled through OTA technology, Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. and Tesla Motors (Beijing) Co., Ltd. will contact relevant users through Tesla service centers to upgrade the software for the vehicles free of charge.

According to Tesla's production and delivery data released a few days ago, in 2023, Tesla will produce about 1.85 million electric vehicles worldwide and deliver about 1.81 million to users, a year-on-year increase of about 35% and 38%, respectively. Achieved its annual delivery target of 1.8 million units, and continued to rank first in the global pure electric vehicle delivery list.
