Recently, Taiwan's crime suspense movie "Pursuit" was released in the mainland, and Zhang Junning performed boldly and passionately in the film, but there were logical problems in the plot, which made netizens feel incomprehensible. It turned out that the version released in mainland China was 23 minutes less than the original version released at Taiwan's Golden Horse Film Festival! With so many highlights being cut, it's no wonder that the plot seems incoherent and fragmented.
The original version in Taiwan received a high score of more than 7 points, but the mainland version only scored 6.2 points. The tight plot and reversal reasoning that the audience was expecting turned into nonsensical unfolding, and the director's ingenuity was destroyed. If it weren't for the heroine Zhang Junning's dedicated performance, this movie would probably be even more ugly. Netizens have called for the release of a complete director's cut to give this suspense film a sense of unity and coherence.
This movie tells the story of policewoman Wu Jie, who fell into grief after her husband's suicide, she wanted to end her life, but found a female corpse by the river, and was forced by the captain to return to work to investigate the unsolved case. Wu Jie was preparing to commit suicide by the river alone, precisely because her husband had just died, and she was grief-stricken and stressed.
But the moment she found the deceased, her police instinct prevailed, and she rushed to report the case and ask for support. This scene is extremely dramatic and shows the complex psychology of the characters.
However, if the causes and consequences of Wu Jie's husband's suicide are deleted, why she is by the river, her psychological state is completely incomprehensible. This is one of the important reasons for the confusion of the plot. After the key details are cut, the audience cannot grasp the relationship and motivation of the characters, and the whole story is difficult to move forward.
After Wu Jie reopened the case, she met a rookie policewoman who had just graduated. This was obviously deliberately done by the superiors to divert Wu Jie's attention. But by removing the details of how the captain arranged the case, this sense of compulsion could not be expressed. We didn't know that the captain deliberately gave the case to the rookie and forced Wu Jie to return to his old business.
If the plot of how the captain assigns the case is retained, Wu Jie's helplessness about being forced to take over the case can be expressed. She wanted to end her life, but she was involved in the corpse mutilation case, which is a huge contrast. Retaining the assignment process allows the audience to understand the mental process of Wu Jie's comeback, and also highlights the importance of the case.
As Wu Jie investigated deeply, she found that the murdered woman was abused before her death, and the murderer's methods were cruel, which was a relatively complicated case. In order to save people, Wu Jie had to break into the suspect's home alone. But after deleting the details of the case, the audience doesn't know Wu Jie's motive for taking the risk, and they don't understand why she chose to take the risk alone.
If the details of the progress of the case are retained, the audience can understand that Wu Jie is actually trying to save a kidnapped girl. Because time was tight, she had to go into the danger alone. The deleted part made the audience wonder why she acted recklessly and ruined the movie-watching experience.
This incident quickly aroused heated discussions among netizens on the Internet, and some netizens believed that copyrighted films imported from the mainland should not be deleted and cut at will, which did not respect the original author's creative intentions and could not present the effect that the director wanted.
Some netizens also believe that the film distributor may have to make deletions in consideration of the mainland's censorship system and audience tastes. But the excessive cuts are incomprehensible and lose the charm of the original.
Some netizens believe that the distributor should consider applying to the film and television department to release a complete director's cut. Even if it cannot be screened publicly, it can be distributed through online platforms and other means. All you can see now is a fragmented and incomplete edited version, which is very different from the original. It's unfair to both the filmmakers and the audience.
"Pursuit" is a high-quality Taiwanese crime suspense film, and Zhang Junning's bold performance could have brought the audience a tight plot and unexpected reversals. But after a large number of cuts, the remaining story is fragmented and difficult to attract audiences. We call on the film distributor to release the full version to restore the original creative intent of the director.
Even if it cannot be released, you should consider disseminating the full version through the Internet and other means. Most viewers now see only a mutilated and incomplete cut, which is very different from the original.
Film, as an art form, should respect and preserve the director's creation, rather than arbitrarily deleting the adaptation.
