Xia Tongshan, together with the officials at the time, jointly petitioned the emperor to request a retrial from the Criminal Department at the time, and received the grace of Empress Dowager Cixi, after which Xia Tongshan conducted a detailed investigation into the case and finally found that the case had been mistried. In 1876, the case was so unjust that it was revealed, and dozens of officials were punished to varying degrees. This incident made Xia Tongshan famous in the world, and some descendants made the story of Xia Tongshan into an opera, which was widely circulated in the folk.
Xia Tongshan was originally in a turbulent era, Empress Dowager Cixi was in power, and the people's lives were not good, but Xia Tongshan was still able to stick to his nature, not to be corrupt or bribed, and even to clean himself when many officials smoked opium, and forbade others to smoke opium. He also had people plant trees widely to prevent soil erosion, actively provide disaster relief in times of drought, and asked the imperial court to allocate funds to the victims.
