American H-34 Choctaw helicopter

author:Fleet on the Great Waves

Brief introduction

The H-34 is a utility helicopter developed by Sikorsky. Originally intended as an anti-submarine helicopter for the U.S. Navy, the design appealed to the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army as a medium-sized transport helicopter for firefighting, search and rescue, personnel transportation, and aerospace equipment recovery. It was also the last piston-engined helicopter to enter service with the United States Marine Corps.

The Sikorsky S-58 is an upgraded version of the H-19 Chikso, which is largely identical in design, but has a trailing rear fuselage and landing gear instead of a 4 landing gear model. The S-58 made its maiden flight on March 8, 1954, and first entered service with the U.S. Navy in September.

The H-34 was also built and developed in the United Kingdom in 1958 by Westland with a turboshaft engine, and became a Wessex helicopter

France purchased the first batch of 134 Choctaw aircraft, which were shipped from the United States in kits and assembled locally by China Southern Airlines. Later, China Southern Airlines produced another 166 aircraft domestically;

Total production reached 2,108 aircraft
