Recently, in Washixia Town, Ruoqiang County, Xinjiang, dozens of sheep in several herdsmen's homes were bitten to death by snow leopards, and the police then launched a search and successfully captured the snow leopard.

The police of the Ruoqiang County Public Security Bureau told the Red Star News reporter that Washixia Town is located in the depths of the Gobi Desert, less than 1,000 meters above sea level, and no snow leopards have been found before. At present, the Ruoqiang Public Security Bureau has joined hands with the County Forestry and Grassland Bureau to transfer the snow leopard to the Altun Mountain National Nature Reserve Administration, and then release it.

The captured snow leopard is in good physical condition

According to the Ruoqiang County Public Security Bureau, at about 11 o'clock on December 22, the Washixia Police Station of the Ruoqiang County Public Security Bureau in Xinjiang received a request for help from the public, saying that animals had invaded many herdsmen's sheepfolds and had bitten 27 sheep to death, requesting that the police be dispatched to deal with them. After receiving the call for help, the police station immediately organized the police to rush to the scene of the crime to deal with it. After on-site investigation and understanding from many parties, it turned out that a snow leopard broke into Tashsayi Village, Washixia Town, and attacked many herdsmen's sheepfolds at night.

In line with the principle of protecting wild animals and ensuring the safety of people's lives and property, the people's police, together with the county forestry and grassland bureau, village committee and other departments, immediately evacuated the herdsmen and livestock around the crime site, and promptly formulated a feasible plan. The police searched for more than three hours and placed a dead sheep in an iron cage and successfully captured the snow leopard when it entered the cage to hunt for food.

The snow leopard was successfully captured

After inspection by the staff, the snow leopard had no obvious external injuries and was in good physical condition and met the conditions for release. In order to prevent the snow leopard from invading the herder's home again, the Ruoqiang Public Security Bureau and the Forestry and Grassland Bureau handed the snow leopard to the Altun Mountain National Nature Reserve Administration, more than 500 kilometers away. The snow leopard was then sent to the town of Etunbulak at an altitude of more than 3,000 meters for release. At the same time, in order to recover the economic losses of the herdsmen, the police took the initiative to help the herdsmen contact the relevant departments to negotiate compensation for the herdsmen's losses.

The police of Ruoqiang County Public Security Bureau told the Red Star News reporter that the town of Washixia is at a low altitude, and no snow leopards have been found before, and the herdsmen's sheep were attacked at night.

The snow leopard is assessed as vulnerable by the IUCN Red List, and on the mainland, the snow leopard is listed as a national first-class key protected wild animal. According to the information, the snow leopard is the topmost predator in the alpine environment and is known as the "king of the snowy mountains". In the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding mountains, the snow leopard usually inhabits between 3,300-5,000 meters above sea level, but can occasionally be seen at higher altitudes, making it the highest cat in the world. In the Tianshan Mountains and Altai Mountains in Xinjiang, as well as the Mongolian Plateau and its surroundings, the snow leopard's range can also be as low as 2,000 meters above sea level.
