On July 6, at Point Pollent in the northwestern Turkish city of Canakkale, 39-year-old Demir and her boyfriend Gulsu came to enjoy a stunning sunset. Originally, the couple's marriage proposal took place in a romantic atmosphere, but the good times were short-lived, and Demir fell to her death from a 31-meter-high cliff a few minutes later.
At first, it seemed like an accident. Gursu claimed that the two had drunk a little wine, and that Demir accidentally stumbled and fell off a cliff. However, after 5 months of investigation, the police found traces of an altercation on the edge of the cliff, and the case was reversed. The police believe that this was not a simple accident, but a deliberate act of homicide. Eventually, Gursu was arrested by the police on charges of intentional homicide.
It all started on July 6. On this day, Gursu took Demir to Cape Pollant, a romantic place to propose a marriage proposal with its spectacular views. At some point after admiring the sunset, Gursu took out a diamond ring that he had prepared and proposed to Demir.
Gursu said that Demir was so moved that she happily agreed to the proposal. He claimed to be overly excited, and immediately returned to the car to get the food and drinks he had prepared, ready to celebrate with his fiancée. But when he returned to the edge of the cliff after picking up his things, he suddenly heard Demir's scream, and ran over to see that Demir had fallen from the 31-meter-high cliff and fell at the bottom of the mountain.
Gursu immediately called the police. When the ambulance crew arrived, despite an attempt to resuscitate her, she succumbed to her injuries and eventually died.
At first, it seemed like a tragic accident. Gursu said that the two had a little drink, and that Demir may have accidentally stumbled and fallen off a cliff. However, in the next five months of investigation, the police found signs of concern at the scene of the incident.
Police revealed that on the edge of the cliff where Demir fell, obvious traces of altercation and scuffle were found. This made the police start to suspect that maybe the case was not as simple as Gursu said.
At the same time, Demir's family began to question Gulsu's claims. They said that Demir had planned to break up with Gursu before, and that the trip may have been to explain her intention to break up in person. So after Gursu proposed, Demir probably rejected him, and the two had an argument.
