The Icelandic Meteorological Service said on the 18th that after monitoring intensive seismic activity for several weeks, a volcano on the Reykjanes Peninsula in the southwest of the country spewed lava and smoke that night, reflecting the red night sky. Iceland's meteorological service said it would send a coast guard helicopter to confirm the exact location and size of the eruption from the air. The Icelandic police raised the alert level. Civil Protection has warned the public not to approach the area while emergency responders assess the situation.
