On the morning of December 16th, with the first snow in Nanjing this winter, sponsored by the Jiangsu Federation of Literary and Art Circles, organized by the Jiangsu Contemporary Art Creation Research Association and the Jiangsu Provincial Museum of Modern Art, the "Original Heart is Like a Rock - Zhang Wuli • Cui Xiong Oil Painting Exhibition" opened at the Jiangsu Provincial Museum of Modern Art. Zhang Jianhua, chairman of the Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. He said that oil painting, as a foreign type of painting, has always faced a problem of "creative transformation and innovative development" in the past 100 years since it entered China. The works displayed by Zhang Wuli and Cui Xiong in this exhibition fully reflect their exploration and efforts in creative transformation. This kind of effort can be manifested in three aspects, namely, the creative transformation of the subject matter, the creative transformation of the expression method, and the creative transformation of the artistic spirit. They adhered to Western oil painting but did not stick to it, took it but did not copy it, borrowed it without repeating it, and created a new Chinese oil painting through their own innovative spirit, forming a Chinese style and embodying the Chinese spirit, and then promoting the sinicization and modernization of oil painting. He also encouraged the two artists to continue to stick to their original intentions, continue to move forward on the road of sinicization of oil painting, and achieve greater results.

Zhang Wuli and Cui Xiong share similar backgrounds and life journeys: in the early 80s, they graduated from Nanjing University of the Arts with a major in oil painting, and then worked at the Academy of Fine Arts of Nanjing Normal University and Nanjing University of the Arts, two influential institutions of higher learning in Jiangsu and even the whole country, respectively, and served as administrative leaders at the academy and university levels. In terms of artistic style, Zhang Wuli emphasizes the rigor of plastic art and the purity of oil painting language, and his paintings often impress the viewer with their solid modeling treatment and accurate color expression; Cui Xiong focuses more on a poetic spirit and expression, and the regional characteristics, humanistic atmosphere and artistic tension of the south of the Yangtze River revealed in his works have an elegant and graceful temperament, which is pleasing to the eye. In this exhibition, most of the two painters display their new works in recent years, which not only shows their profound skills, but also reflects their new exploration of oil painting language and new thinking in artistic expression in recent years.

As soon as Zhang Wuli opened his mouth, everyone was happy: Today, Cui Xiong and I are both nervous and anxious to jointly hold an exhibition of oil paintings at the Museum of Modern Art, and the decision was made after a tangled process. Because, after the epidemic, all kinds of art exhibitions are blooming like a hundred flowers, a prosperous scene, and we are also out to join in the fun at the moment, a little unwilling to be lonely. We can't be regarded as professional painters, but painting is our original intention, and we have never put down the brush while engaging in higher art education and management.

Cui Xiong then replied skillfully: When the sun sets, Brother Wuli and Brother Wuli also want to give themselves a touch of brilliant color with the afterglow of the sunset, and they also want to leave their colors to Nanjing, the city where we Xi study, live and work. Our idea was fortunate to be supported by the leaders of the Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and the Jiangsu Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the Jiangsu Contemporary Art Creation Research Association, and the Jiangsu Museum of Modern Art jointly gave us a platform to display, so that our works had the opportunity to report to everyone.
Zhang Wuli went on to say that the art of painting has become an indispensable way of life for us along with our Xi and work. In today's diversified context, oil painting, as a traditional form of painting art, contains richer connotations and more diverse interpretations under the new historical conditions. Our works are personal understanding and display of painting, and they are "self-talking" or "self-righteous" in perseverance.
Subsequently, as ridiculed by Cui Xiong, the two turned on the "mutual praise" mode. Zhang Wuli said that as a classmate and fellow practitioner, Cui Xiong's diligence and integrity, composure and sensitivity, kindness and modesty are the foundation of our mutual trust and friendship...... Cui Xiong said: During my college years, Brother Wuli has always been my professional role model, and he has been guided by famous teachers since he was a child, so he is the best among our classmates. In order not to alienate me from the art of painting, Brother Wuli tried his best to create conditions for me and took me to participate in the creation and participate in the exhibition. Although I was busy with work during my tenure, with the encouragement of Brother Wuli, I also had to apply a few brushstrokes to relax my tense nerves and numb my troubled mind, which can be regarded as "self-entertainment". Our brotherhood of more than 40 years has been sublimated in today's exhibition. Of course, all of this is inseparable from the leaders and teachers who care for and teach us.
Then enter the "Thanksgiving Session". Zhang Wuli looks back on his own path of learning art, and is honored to have been taught by several respected seniors: first of all, Mr. Min Shuqian, who made me know what "sketching" is and how to draw it. The second is Mr. Lu Shi, whose early oil paintings are the first time he has seen the original oil paintings; there is also Mr. Qin Xuanfu, who let him participate in the "ink experiment" and have a different experience, and Mr. Xu Minghua made him understand that color is the soul of painting and the life of oil painting!
Cui Xiong's gratitude to his mentor was equally touching. He said: In 1991, Mr. Feng Jianqin, then the dean of Nanjing University of the Arts, transferred me back to Nanyi from Nantong to work in Nanyi, and it has been more than 30 years Xi. During my work at Nanyi, I was fortunate to be a master's student of Mr. Shen Xinggong, who was my idol since childhood. Mr. Shen's influence on my profession is incomparable, the works I exhibited today have been carefully guided by Mr. Shen, he has improved my artistic concept, enhanced my ability to control the changes in the picture, thank you Mr. Shen Xinggong and his wife Mr. Zhu Lei for their love!
In the end, the two artists cooperated tacitly to express their original intentions together: they hoped that with this original intention, they could continue to work the next artistic journey.
