The Central Meteorological Observatory issued the first orange warning of the highest level of cold wave this winter at 10 o'clock on December 14. Affected by the strong cold wave, it is expected that from 14 o'clock on December 14 to 08 o'clock on December 17, most parts of the country will cool down by 8~12 °C from west to east and from north to south, among them, central and northern Shaanxi, northern and western Shanxi, central Inner Mongolia, northern Hebei, western Beijing, eastern Liaoning, southeastern Jilin, eastern Henan and eastern and southern Jiangnan, southeastern southwest China, most of South China and other places will cool down by 14~16 °C, central Inner Mongolia, northern Shaanxi, southeastern Jilin, Some parts of eastern Liaoning have cooled by more than 20°C.
The surging news reporter counted the weather forecast data of 31 provincial capitals and municipalities directly under the central government, and found that some southern cities, including Hangzhou and Guiyang, will usher in a big jump in temperature, and the maximum temperature will drop by about 20 °C in just 48 hours.
In a quarter of major cities, the temperature has cooled beyond the average of previous years
The Paper reporters sorted out the daily temperature data for a total of 72 years from 1951 to 2022, and calculated the maximum 48-hour cooling range in each year, so as to obtain the average annual maximum decline in each city.
By comparing with this week's expected decline, it is found that among the 31 provincial capitals and municipalities directly under the central government, 8 cities, including Hangzhou, Shanghai, Nanjing, and Guangzhou, have declined, exceeding the average of the largest decline in previous years. In other words, these eight cities will experience an extraordinary temperature drop this week.

According to the meteorological definition, the sliding average temperature must be below 10°C for 5 consecutive days in winter. If we look at the days when the average temperature is below 10°C for five consecutive days, the date of reaching this standard is generally postponed in 31 provincial capitals and municipalities.
In 1953, Kunming "entered winter" on November 23, and in 2022, the date was postponed to December 21. For 70 years, 5 consecutive days with an average temperature below 10°C have been postponed for almost a month.
Why is it still so cold this winter after global warming?
