According to CCTV News, on December 7, the civil works of the second phase of the Jinping Underground Laboratory of China Jinping Underground Frontier Physics Experimental Facility (hereinafter referred to as the "Jinping Large Facility") were completed and the experimental conditions were met. This marks the official opening of the world's deepest and largest extremely deep underground laboratory.

The first batch of 10 experimental project teams from Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China Institute of Atomic Energy and other universities and research institutes were stationed to carry out scientific experiments.

The Jinping Facility is located 2,400 meters underground in Jinping Mountain, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, with a total volume of 330,000 cubic meters. The cosmic ray flux of the laboratory is only 1/100 million of the earth's surface, and it has many advantages such as "extremely low ambient radon precipitation", "extremely low ambient radiation", "ultra-low cosmic ray flux" and "ultra-clean space".

As an important instrument of the country, Jinping Facility will be developed into a world-class deep-earth scientific research center covering particle physics, nuclear astrophysics, cosmology, life science, rock mechanics and other disciplines in the future, helping the national science and technology innovation platform to "leapfrog upgrade".

According to Sichuan Online, Jinping Facility is a major scientific and technological infrastructure that the state prioritizes during the "13th Five-Year Plan" period, the first extremely deep underground laboratory infrastructure construction project in China, and the first large-scale construction of a comprehensive experimental facility with extremely low radiation background and extreme conditions in the world, which started construction in December 2020 and was listed as a forward-looking leading national major scientific and technological infrastructure in 2021.

The Jinping Facility is mainly oriented to the major basic frontier research of new particles and new physics, and carries out cutting-edge research in basic science such as dark matter direct detection experiments, neutrino-free double-beta decay experiments, as well as key nuclide synthesis processes and stellar evolution in the field of nuclear astrophysics, providing platform support for the research of major basic frontier physical problems in the field of continental particle physics and nuclear physics. After the first batch of experimental project teams settle in, they will make every effort to break through key core technologies and strive to produce a number of major original scientific research achievements as soon as possible.

China Jinping underground laboratory is divided into two phases of construction, the first phase was officially put into use on December 12, 2010, the total volume of the laboratory hall is about 4,000 cubic meters, has carried out Tsinghua University-led high-purity germanium direct detection (CDEX), The direct detection of dark matter such as liquid xenon direct detection (PandaX) led by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Jinping neutrino experiment led by Tsinghua University have achieved a number of world-leading scientific research results, promoting the research of dark matter in the continent from scratch and reaching the international advanced level in a relatively short period of time.

With the completion of the second phase of Jinping facilities, the available space of China Jinping Underground Laboratory will be expanded by nearly 80 times on the basis of the first phase, reaching 300,000 cubic meters, and the construction area of the above-ground auxiliary experimental platform will reach about 4,000 square meters, which is expected to become the center of the world's deep earth physics experiments.
