A few months ago, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Musk's Neural Connections to conduct human clinical trials on a brain-computer interface project. The procedure involves removing part of the skull and implanting a chip into the human brain, which can remain in the brain for years. Neuroconnections has encouraged volunteers over the age of 18 to apply for human trials of brain-computer interfaces for patients over the age of 18 who have "quadriplegia, paraplegia, vision loss, hearing loss, and inability to speak." In late September of this year, Neural Connections officially announced the recruitment of "testers" from all over the world. Thousands of people have reportedly expressed "super interest" in volunteering.
Bloomberg News reported on the 7th that "Neural Connection" plans to perform 11 surgeries on implanted brain-computer interface devices on clinical volunteers next year, 27 in 2025, and 79 in 2026. It is estimated that each operation will cost US$10,500, or about 77,000 yuan. According to documents provided to investors by Neural Connection, its annual revenue will reach about $100 million over the next five years.
Founded in 2016, the company hopes to establish a communication and control channel connecting the human brain and external devices, namely brain-computer interfaces, by implanting electrodes, chips and other devices into the human brain, so as to achieve the purpose of directly controlling external devices with brain bioelectric signals or regulating brain activity with external stimuli. If successful, this technology could benefit patients with visual or mobility impairments or other medical conditions. Neural Connections has tested chips and devices with monkeys and piglets.
