"Insider" is a spy war drama directed by Tao Lingling and starring Sun Chun, Zhong Hanliang, Sun Feifei, etc. The play is based on the 1949 battle of crossing the river, and tells the story of a series of love-hate hatreds and life-and-death choices between Chen Huaiyuan (played by Sun Chun), the Kuomintang city defense commander who guarded the ancient city of Linjiang in the south of the Yangtze River, and Chu Xiangxue (played by Sun Feifei), an underground party member of the Communist Party of China, Li Man'e (played by Cai Wenyan), an agent of the Gui family, and Zhang Chi (played by Fan Zhiqi), an agent of the Secret Bureau, when facing the rebellion, co-optation and surveillance of the tripartite forces of the People's Liberation Army, the Gui family and the secret bureau.
The climax of the plot
Part 1: Chu Xiangxue's identity is exposed. Chu Xiangxue is the secret code name of the CCP's underground party, "Primrose", she lurked in the Kuomintang Military Police Regiment, served as a confidential secretary, and at the same time established a relationship with Chen Huaiyuan, in order to rebel against him to the People's Liberation Army. However, her identity was discovered by Zhang Chi of the Secret Bureau, who took advantage of the jealousy and suspicion of her uncle Chu Liyan (played by Bao Dazhi) to design a trap to make Chu Xiangxue show her feet in front of Chen Huaiyuan. In an instant, Chen Huaiyuan lost the woman he loved the most and his most trusted subordinates, and fell into great pain and struggle.
Part II: Chen Huaiyuan's Great Uprising. After experiencing Chu Xiangxue's betrayal and Zhang Chi's threat, Chen Huaiyuan decided to join forces with Li Man'e of the Gui family to resist the control of the Secret Bureau, and at the same time developed admiration and yearning for the People's Liberation Army. After learning the news that the People's Liberation Army was about to cross the river, he led his troops to launch a major uprising, established contact with the People's Liberation Army, and made a significant contribution to the victory of the battle of crossing the river. However, his uprising was also met with crazy revenge from the Secret Bureau and the Gui family, and he not only lost his relatives, friends and comrades-in-arms, but was also framed by Zhang Chi and forced to die with Chu Xiangxue.
Plot evaluation
"The Insider" is a well-made, excellent acting, compact plot, and suspenseful spy war drama. The play not only shows the historical background and military strategy of the Liberation War period, but also delves into the complexity and multifaceted nature of human nature, as well as the power and sacrifice of love. The leading actors of the play, Sun Chun, Zhong Hanliang, Sun Feifei, etc., all have excellent performances, especially Sun Chun, who portrays the loyalty, bravery, strength and contradictions of Chen Huaiyuan's character vividly and movingly. The play also has some shortcomings, such as the logic and details of some plots are far-fetched and flawed, such as Chu Xiangxue's expression and eyes are a little monotonous and dull, such as the characters of some supporting characters are a little blurred and flat. Overall, the show is a spy war masterpiece worth watching, which shocks and touches people.
