She lived in Israel after she was born and later went to Portland, Oregon, USA, where she spent part of her childhood attending kindergarten at the Jewish Portland Academy.
Although she returned to Israel as an adult, Shani refused to serve in the military "out of peace views", and her German passport played a role in this.
Shani was also killed at the festival by 260 people, and her Mexican boyfriend, Orión Hernández Radoux, was believed to have been abducted by Hamas militants in the attack.
